Although we’ve been to the mountains a hundred times
seen a hundred sunsets…a hundred sunrises…
each time we revisit their grandeur
they offer a few surprises.
This year as we pulled up to the cabin
in the early days of June
We were greeted as we rounded the bend
by the rhododendrons now in bloom.
The rhododendrons have usually finished blooming by the time we arrive each year…
but we like to think since, with the pandemic,
they missed us…and waited for us to appear.
And we’re glad they did because they have a certain elegance…
a unique beauty and charm and style
and I’m not sure how they do it…
but rhododendrons always make us smile.
Although I’m not a linguist
and I’m pretty sure this can’t be validated…
I believe it was after the Romans first saw rhododendrons
the color purple was created.
We love when we see the rhododendrons
Before their time to bloom comes to an end…
It’s like coming to the mountains
and visiting old friends.
Perhaps that’s one of the reasons we love the mountains
Perhaps that’s why we’re always glad we came
because in a world that is constantly changing
our rhododendrons stay the same.
For there is nothing quite as beautiful
In these early days in June
than rounding the bend…after a long time away
and seeing the rhododendrons all abloom.
