COUNTING JOYS

When we’re young it’s important and it’s easier…we cannot make a mistake…if we want to know how old we are…we count the candles on our cake.

As we grow older…we may still have candles…but when it comes to the amount…unlike when we were children…we pay less attention to the count.

By the time you reach my age…69…you’re just glad that you’re not dead…and you’ve stopped counting candles years ago and started counting joys instead.

For one of the blessings of getting older is knowing it’s our joy and not our age that’s paramount…and, if we’re lucky, we’ve had so many joys in life…that, just like the candles…we long ago lost count.

I suppose that’s why the older we grow…with each birthday we find ourselves looking back at memories of our friends and family members…and it’s never our age we think about…it’s the joys that we remember.

So that’s what I’ll be doing today…thinking back to when I was just a boy…and of the 69 years I’ve been alive…remembering all the joys.

And looking ahead to another year…

wondering what new memories I’ll make

and what joys will join a lifetime of joys…

next year…

when they place another candle on my cake.

PLAYING AMONG THE STARS

They had the same routine every night before he went to bed…his dad would read him a book, tuck him in…then this is what he said:

“May this be the best night you’ve ever had my son of any night so far…may your dreams be filled with wonder as you play among the stars.”

One morning he awoke with a smile on his face…remembering the dream he had…and he quickly ran to the breakfast table so he could tell his dad.

“Dad! Dad! It finally happened!” he yelled…”I dreamt I played among the stars…

in all my dreams this was the best dream I’ve ever had…by far.

In fact I flew right by Venus and Jupiter…stopping on Mars instead…

and when I told her I thought she was beautiful…boy did she turn red.

Then I sat for a little while and dangled my feet off of the crescent moon…

listening to the constellation Lyra as she played a pretty tune.

As I sat there on the moon I began to feel hotter and hotter and hotter

so I picked up the big dipper and asked Aquarius for some water.

I played fetch with Canis Major and Minor…oh how good it felt…

until Orion told me if I didn’t stop…he’d be taking off his belt.

I spent some time with the North Star…of all the stars he’s the politest

and I talked a lot with Sirius..because he is, of course…the brightest.

I even rode a shooting star and you might find this hard to understand

but when I woke up in my bed this morning…I found this stardust in my hand.

His father smiled at his son’s excitement…then said, son, come with me

there’s something I’ve been holding onto I think it’s time for you see.

He opened up a drawer in his bedroom saying. “I too have flown among the stars…

then reaching into the drawer…he pulled out an old and weathered jar.

In here is stardust I’ve saved all these years…as hard to believe as it may seem

but when I was your age…years ago…I had a similar dream.

I suggest you keep your stardust with you always…he said handing his son a jar..

to be shared with your children…the morning after…they play among the stars.

SNOWMEN

I spent my childhood in Ohio…it was a wonderful place to grow…

I especially like the change of seasons…and playing in the snow.

I remember how the snow could cancel school…and I never will forget

the feeling of creating a snowman…when the snow was wet.

I’d start out with a small snowball which I’d pack together in my hands…

then I’d slowly start to roll it…and then push it across the land.

Which each roll my snowball grew a little larger than the roll before…

until it got so large…I could not push it anymore.

Knowing the base was finished I’d smooth it with my hands…

thinking it was me but knowing it was the snowman who decided where he’d stand.

And then I’d roll another ball…one I could lift and set upon the base…

and finally one a little smaller I made into his face.

I’d give him two arms, two eyes, a nose…and a smile to make him kind…

with any twigs or stones lying about…with whatever I could find.

And I was happy with my accomplishment…I’d stand admiring him for a while…and I always felt he was happy too….there was something in his smile.

The miracle of building a snowman is…even on the hottest summer days…the memory stays with me…it will never melt away.

I’ve spent my adulthood in Florida…another wonderful place to grow…where the winters are more mild and there’s never a chance for snow.

But that doesn’t stop me from remembering as a child…rolling snowballs across the land…and re-creating that feeling by building a snowman…

in the sand.

ONE MORE DAY

If you were told this was going to be your last day that tomorrow you’ll be leaving everything behind…I wonder, after hearing that, what thoughts pop into your mind?

Is there one person…maybe more…someone you have known…to whom you might want to write a letter or talk to on the phone

Is there a person whom you’ve been missing…who you want once more to see?

Do you want to say ‘I love you’ one final time to your friends and family?

Would you watch the sunrise one more time…or count the stars up in the sky”

Is there a place you’d like to visit once more before you die?

If this is your final day on Earth…the final moment your destiny will allow…then it stands to reason, if you think about it, your most important time…is now.

Since you can’t be sure if todays the day your life will slip into the past…it’s probably a good idea to live every day as if it is your last.

Which means each moment is an opportunity to be generous and kind…to do the things that only a moment ago…popped into your mind.

That way…even if you don’t die tomorrow…when you finally leave this place

you will leave with no regrets…and a smile on your face.

And just as important to your heart…your soul…your mind…

will be the smiles on the faces…of those you leave behind.

Please excuse me now…I have to go…you see I intended this poem to be for you…

but I just realized there are a number people I’d like to call

and a number of things I’d like to do.

ONE WISH

After years of being married…raising children and watching grandchildren grow…the husband looked over at his wife and said, “There’s something I’d like to know.”

“Have you been happy all our years together?” He asked.

A smile lit up her face.

“Yes!” She happily conceded…for everything we’ve ever had is everything I’ve ever needed.”

“The joy of our love has given me the strength to face any sorrow or sadness in life undaunted…knowing everything we’ve ever had is everything I’ve ever wanted.”

“Well, old man I hope you’re happy with the answer I’ve given you…but now it’s my turn to ask: Have you been happy too?”

He walked over and took her in his arms saying, “Years ago I had the good fortune to marry by best friend…and I remember thinking if I only have one dance with you I wish for a song that never ends.”

“And after all our years with me living…loving…and dancing next to you…how can I not be happy…for you see…my wish came true.”

10 YEARS

10 years ago we taped our four grandchildren…trying as best we could…

to capture time in a bottle…to catch a moment of their childhood.

We asked them questions about themselves..about their likes…their hopes and dreams that day…and once we they were done answering…for the next 10 years we packed that tape away.

Yesterday 10 years was up….and it was time for us to to explore…

the voices of our young grandchildren…now ages 15 to 24.

It was wonderful…listening to their voices…recorded 10 years ago

but it also was a reminder of how fast time flies…and how quickly we all grow.

How every moment of every day amidst our laughter and our cries…like it or not…the world is changing…right before our eyes.

As we listened to their hopes and dreams…to voices that now sound strange…some of their likes and hopes and wishes stayed the same…but some of them had changed.

A reminder to all of us…as we live our life…day in…day out…day in…when one door closes on our dreams…it only means another adventure’s about to begin.

So we told them our wish for them…for our whole family is that their lives are filled with more joyousness than pain…that their moments in the sun…outlive their moments in the rain…

And to look on all the changes in their lives with joy, and happiness and pride…as we reminded them the tighter we hold on to one another…the more we all enjoy the ride.

ECHOES OF CHRISTMAS

As part of our Christmas tradition…one to which we lovingly adhere…we celebrated our Christmas on Christmas Eve again this year.

The house is now silent…Deborah’s fast asleep…our children and grandchildren are no longer here…and I find myself awake..alone…with Christmas still echoing in my ears.

Echoes of Deborah baking cookies and putting them on display…echoes of our house awash in their wonderful bouquet.

Echoes of those moment we found ourselves pacing back-and-forth across the floor…waiting for our children and grandchildren to walk through our front door.

Echoes of the hugs received by each and everyone…realizing with each hug the giving has begun.

Echoes of opening presents as each person mapped out their own space…echoes of the smiles, the laughter and even some tears on each and every face.

Echoes of our grandchildren’s voices on a tape…ten years ago they made it…blending with their voices of today the moment that we played it.

Echoes  of our family game…played each year religiously…two teams…the gals against the guys…with yours truly as emcee.

Echoes of our door prizes…they’re cheesy a fact that everybody knows…echoes of our pizzas…delivered by Domino’s.

Echoes of all of us sitting outside around the fire…echoes of our family that comfort and inspire.

Echoes of another Christmas Eve when time just seemed to fly…echoes of the hugs that lingered when it was time to say goodbye.

How blessed are those of us who hear the echoes…echoes we know will last…echoes made in the present that find a way to blend with echoes of the past.

Blessed to hear those echoes in our house as from room to room we roam…

blessed to realize it is these echoes that make our house…our home.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVE

I love Christmas Day… the giving…the receiving, a small reminder of the make believe

but I also love the days that lead up to Christmas…most notably Christmas Eve.

The gifts sit wrapped under the tree…unopened…their ribbons and bows are tied.

Christmas Eve is the last night to dream about the presents hidden inside.

The anticipation brings with it a warmth…a joy, you see it as your walking down the street…you feel it in your heart…you see it in the faces of everyone you meet.

I guess I shouldn’t be astonished by this feeling anymore

because I carry with me a history of enjoying the night before.

I remember the night before my first date, I was filled with excitement and awe

I remember that night as affectionately as I remember the movie we saw.

I remember the night before I was married, my face was in a perpetual grin.

Wondering what the future held…waiting for that future to begin.

I remember the night before my children were born as much as the days of their births.

I imagine if you looked you wouldn’t have found a happier person on Earth.

I remember the night before each grandchild was born..memories I hope will stay…

Four nights before I will remember…until my dying day.

Yes, the night before any special day in life has the power to enchant, to bewitch…to beguile

Which makes Christmas Eve another example of what makes this journey worthwhile.

So as much as I enjoy Christmas Day there are just as many reasons…I believe

to wish all of you who are reading this a joyous and happy Christmas Eve.

LITTLE THINGS?

We never know in this life what in the next moment fate will bring…I suppose that’s why we spend so much time relishing in all the little things.

Like spending a day with our children…their children…our grandchildren too…

Like that smile of contentment on our faces…when the day is through.

Like driving in our car with the windows down on a cold Floridian night…

oohing and awing while taking pictures of our neighbors Christmas lights.

Like taking the time to write a letter…sending a friend our warm regards.

Like having a picnic at the picnic table on the patio in our back yard.

Like a walk under a starlit sky or a stroll along the shore…

Like dancing through our lives…with people we adore.

Like seeing a young girl sleeping on her kitchen floor…with her new puppy by her head…Because her parents told her that puppy’s too young to sleep with her in bed.

Like helping a young boy find a book in the bookstore…and having to smile and pause as he pays you with his own money then says, “Thank you Santa Claus.”

I imagine we all have them…little moments we compile…

Little things that give us pause…little things that make us smile.

It’s funny how, at the time they’re happening, they seem insignificant and small…but the more we live…the more we realize…they’re not so little after  all.

So here’s a toast to a life filled with little things…where each one is a shining star…and to realizing when it comes to the little things…

how big they truly are.

GREAT UNCLE

This is a story about an uncle…and two things that make him great.

The first would be his patience…his ability to wait.

The second: his sister’s daughter just had a baby girl…

meaning the members of his family have increased…

meaning now he is a great uncle and her baby…his great niece.

But with so many family members rushing in to feast their eyes and to behold her…This great uncle got to see her…but he never got to hold her.

So many times he wanted to…so many times he’d yearn…

but he would always acquiesce and give someone else his turn.

Until the day he got to feel his great niece and all her charms…

when it was finally his turn to hold her in his arms.

He held her for a long time and as his arms grew numb…

all the time he smiled…and all the time she sucked her thumb.

He’s not sure how it happened but once into his arms his great niece climbed…His world shrunk down to just the two of them and he lost all track of time

And even though this great uncle didn’t get to hold his great niece right away…that was not to be their fate…

One look at the two of them together and you knew…it was worth the wait.

Worth the wait for the great niece to feel the comfort and safety of her great uncle’s arms…and to know that he will be there to keep her safe from harm.

And worth the wait for the great uncle who got to feel what all of us who’ve ever held a baby already know…

Once you hold a baby in your arms…you never want to let them go.

SHADES OF GRAY

I love the bright and festive colors of Christmas…of every holiday…

but I’m also aware of how they contrast against a backdrop painted gray.

I was raised in the Catholic religion…where I was taught the difference between wrong and right…with the Bible and scriptures as our guide…everything was black or white.

Then growing up I began to witness the way black and white interplay…

how so much of the world we live in has blended into gray.

In the Catholic Church…priests taught us the 10 Commandments…they celebrated the communal feast…and we are left to wonder how so many innocent children could be molested by these priests.

Our leaders assure us every child is precious…we will protect them…they tell us…we have no reason to doubt it…but then we see our children gunned down in their schools…and our leaders do nothing about it.

You know if you are gay or transgender…you’ve known it all along…but then you’re told you need to be fixed…that who you are…is wrong.

We are all humans we are all connected but much to our Creator’s chagrin…we forget those same connections when we judge each other by the color of our skin.

In this country we’re all  immigrants…except, of course, the indigenous people who were here long before…but we watch when immigrants…say to other immigrants…

you’re not welcomed anymore.

In the written history of America…we are the greatest country in the world…where everyone is free we proclaim as we wave our flags…red, white and blue…but when we’re taught or read our actual history…we realize…that never has been true.

As we live from day to day…as we attempt to fulfill our hopes and wishes and dreams…

our initial world of right and wrong…is never as simple as it seems…

Which is why I wish for solutions to our problems every Christmas…

It’s why every day I pray..

because our holiday colors will never be as bright or as festive…

if we keep muting them with gray.

THE NUTCRACKER...SWEET

 THE NUTCRACKER…SWEET

In my 69 years I had never seen the Nutcracker Suite…never experienced the ballet….never heard Tchaikovsky’s entire score…that is…until yesterday.

As I sat captivated by the music…by the dancing and the fact there were no words to any song…I had to wonder to myself…what in heaven’s name has taken me so long!

I watched the performance mesmerized…thanking the Gods for creating people who can move in such a delicately beautiful way…while at the same time thanking whatever person or persons created the ballet.

As the music thundered through the air and the dancers floated off the floor…I was hit by the realization…this is what our bodies were created for.

Our legs were made strong yet elegant allowing us to leap up to the sky…our arms were created to be as graceful as wings making it appear that we can fly.

When the Gods created us non-dancers…they left not one part up to chance…our ears were created to hear the music…our eyes to enjoy the dance.

As I watched the arabesques…the pirouettes…the magic happening on the floor…I thought how our mouths were meant to stay closed more often…so our eyes can see and our ears can listen…perhaps a little more.

Which also made me wonder with our eyes closed…our eyes and ears open to the beauty on display…is it possible to hate at all…while attending the ballet.

Perhaps the Gods were subtly trying to tell us…conceivably…perchance

the solution to some of life’s problems…can be found within the dance.

Perhaps that’s why these dancers were created to be so nimble…

so graceful on their feet….

To simply remind us there is beauty and love in the world…

as and to make the Nutcracker sweet.

THE MEANING OF THE DANCE

As we dance the dance of life…as with each new day all the world’s dancers are convening…have you ever wondered what it is…that gives our dance its meaning?

I’ve had the good fortune to dance in many places and although I’ve never been to France…I’m pretty sure the meaning of the dance isn’t found in where I dance.

I’ve danced at different times…different days…different years…and although that does…the dance…enhance it…I’m pretty sure the meaning of the dance isn’t found in when I dance it.

I’ve danced many different kinds of dances…some planned…some merely danced by chance…and I’m pretty sure the meaning of the dance isn’t found in how I dance.

So what is it then?  What gives our dances their meaning as we dance different dances…in different places…through different years….

When we look around at our friends and family…he answer is quite clear…

Yes, finding the meaning of our dance of life need not be shrouded in mystery or myth…

for I believe the meaning of the dance

can be found

in who we’re dancing with.

A LOVE SONG

One of the beautiful mysteries of music….perhaps the nature of its art…is how certain notes…when strung together…can be imprinted on the heart.

Something in the music moves you…you feel alive and comforted..and strong…and what once was a string of random notes…becomes your favorite song.

And whenever you hear your favorite song drifting through the air…you turn up the volume and…for a moment…it’s as if no one else is there.

When that song arrives…when those first notes reach your heart…there’s a 100% chance….you will smile…sing along…or find a way to dance.

I think finding love is a lot like this…if you’r lucky…before long…you find a person who imprints upon your heart…just like your favorite song.

Something about that person moves you…it’s as if your heart has opened a new door…you feel stronger…more comforted…and more alive than you’ve ever felt before.

And when you see that person…when into each other’s eyes you stare…in that moment…for a moment…it’s as if you’re the only two people there.

Yes, once you’ve found that kind of love…there’s a 100% chance…there will be at least one moment every day when you smile…sing or dance.

For somewhere in the beautiful mystery of life…perhaps that is the nature of its art…

The right notes have strung together to imprint a love song on your heart..

LOVE

I’d just finished reading a story to my daughter and as I tucked her into bed…she looked at me with her wide eyes, “Mommy, what is love.” She said.

And so I did what parents do when they’re not sure what to say…I took a deep breath and dove right in…hoping to find my way.

I leaned in close while searching for an answer somewhere in my brain…

“Love,” I said holding her hand, “is not so easy to explain”.

“Love is everywhere,” I started. “It glides upon the wind…it floats upon the sea…it’s in every creature great or small…it’s in you and it’s in me.”

There is this amazing power to love…of this I have no doubt…the more love that goes into a person…the more love that will come out.”

“Love forms somewhere within our soul…it is the music of our heart…it can be felt between two people…even when they are apart.”

“Love, when you are young, is different than love when you are grown…love is caring about someone else’s happiness more than you care about your own.”

“Love is beautiful, compassionate, forgiving, wonderful and kind…and love can only blossom when two lives are intertwined.”

“Love is just as wonderful when it is old as it is when it was new…I believe, when it comes to love, it’s what we were put on Earth to do.”

When I thought I’d said enough…when my disjointed ramblings were through…I smiled at my daughter and asked, “By the way…what is love to you?”

Her face lit up and without hesitation…with a child’s innocence she proclaimed, “Love is what makes me smile every time I see you…and every time you say my name.”

I was a little befuddled when she asked me ‘What is love’ at the end of a beautiful day…but the next time I am asked…

I’ll be ready

I know exactly what I’m going to say.

CHRISTMAS IN FLORIDA

I love Christmas traditions…from the food to the presents to the tree…how each family has our own traditions…locked into our memory.

I remember Christmases in Ohio…where I was born…where I did my earliest growing…I remember our aluminum Christmas tree with rotating colors…I remember cold…I remember snowing.

I remember sipping hot chocolate watching those tiny marshmallows floating on the top…I remember opening our presents…with our Christmas stockings as backdrop.

I remember celebrating family traditions…customs I hold dear…I remember taking a moment to remember family members who are missing and those no longer here.

And then I moved to Florida…where I’d be blessed to see my own family grow…where we celebrate Christmas in the Florida winter…without the cold…without the snow.

Florida…where our blended family formed new traditions….did I mention…there’s no snow…where on Christmas Eve instead of eating turkey…we order pizza…from Dominoes.

Florida…where we can look at multi-colored Christmas lights without ever donning cold weather gear…where the weather is so balmy flowers of every color bloom all year.

We were in a nursery searching for flowers when Deborah stopped…her face a mixture of happy and sad.. “Whenever I see pansies,” she said, “it makes me think of Dad.”

Deborah’s dad was born around Christmas Day…the day when her owns destiny was cast…and, after a long and happy life, it was around Christmas Day he passed.

For her there are always mixed feelings when Christmas season dawns…she is happy to remember her dad…but sad that he is gone.

So what flowers did we choose?  The decision wasn’t hard…Deborah took them home and planted her dad’s pansies in our yard…

Christmas in Florida is certainly different than all my Christmases long ago…as our blended family mixes old with new traditions in the absence of cold and snow…

But it is our traditions…old and new…I hope our family will forever happily remember…

Like celebrating with pizza on Christmas Eve…

and growing pansies in December.

THE YEAR OF THE NO REINDEER FLU

The Year of the No Reindeer Flu

From the city of No in the south of Japan

Came a flu bug--but it didn’t cause the flu in one man,

Or one woman for that matter. No, the virus that year

Only caused flu symptoms in Santa’s reindeer.

Two weeks before Christmas that bug went on a roll

And soared up the coast straight to the North Pole.

The reindeer’s eyes watered and their noses, they blew

For this was the year of the No Reindeer Flu.

“Santa,” cried Mrs. Claus, “what are we to do?

All of our reindeer have come down with the flu.

Rudolph’s nose is all stuffy, it is not shining red,

He and the others are all sick in their beds.

They’re too ill to get up, and their fevers are high

They’re cold and their achy, why…they’ll never fly.

They can’t help you on Christmas Eve, not this sickly old group

They’ll be resting and drinking my hot chicken soup.

It’s a cinch you can’t pull that big sleigh by yourself.

So what will you do my once jolly old elf?”

Santa thought for a moment, then said, “Put out the word.

This year Santa’s looking for an entire new herd.”

“Tell all the world’s animals,” and Santa started to beam,

“Tomorrow we pick a new sleigh pulling team.

Tell them we need help on this one Christmas Day

Tell them the reindeer are sick...and to bring resumes.”

As the news spread all over the world on that day

Many animals came--you couldn’t keep them away.

When they heard Santa’s in trouble, they all caught a ride

To the North Pole they came from far and from wide.

There were tigers from Burma and llamas from Peru.

There were yaks from Nepal, and goats and cows too.

They came by the hundreds. They came every which way

Just for the chance to pull Santa’s sleigh.

Santa interviewed every animal who came

No matter how big, how little, how wild, how tame.

And after screening and searching the entire collection

Santa was ready to make his selection.

“The choice wasn’t easy.  Everyone was so great.

Bus as you all know I can only pick eight.

So will the following animals please wander up here;

You’ll be subbing tonight for my ailing reindeer.

Salama from Africa I’m proud to declare

You’re one elephant I can’t wait to see fly through the air.

And Erik the moose from the land of Norway

I believe you have some experience pulling a sleigh.

Barakah, the polar bear from off in the distance

Tonight of all nights I could use your assistance.

And Jake from Australia, that’s right, the red kangaroo

Come on up, and, yes, bring your didgeridoo.

Isabella the rhea, now please don’t you cry

I just think it’s about time you learned how to fly.

Next, Buford the Buffalo from out on the plains

Thank you for coming, we can sure use your brains.

And Priscilla the penguin you already know how to fly

You soar under the ocean, now let’s try the sky.

Lu Si, the panda, from China--yes, you.

I‘ve alerted the elves to find some bamboo.

There you have it my friends! I think we are through.

I have made my selection of Santa’s new crew.

Shout out the good news from every rooftop and basement

Santa has found himself eight reindeer replacements.”

Then Santa turned to the crowd that had gathered around.

He raised up his hand and they quieted down.

As the cold of the North wind showed up on his cheeks.

He smiled, and nodded, then started to speak.

He thanked them for coming, he shook every hoof.

And when he was finished he jumped on the roof.

“Thank you again,” he said as it started to snow.

I will always be grateful--and now you must go.

For there isn’t much time, why I can’t believe

How can it already be Christmas Eve?

We’ve got eight animals to get ready and toys to pack too.

There’s so little time and there’s so much to do.”

Then remembering the animals assembled about

He didn’t want them to feel bad, to be sad or to pout.

So he winked at the elves and his beard he did stroke

Then he turned to the animals and once again spoke.

“To thank you for coming, the least we can do

Is to make your trip home fun and easy for you.”

Then the snow began sparkling as it fell from the sky

And all of the animals started to fly.

“Thank you my friends.” He said to the hovering pack.

To show my gratefulness you all may fly back.

You came from as far off as China and Rome.

The least I can do is to let you fly home.

The animals cheered and they laughed and they cried.

They soared and they dove and some learned how to glide.

The sky at the North Pole came alive on that day

As thousands of animals all flew away.

Everyone waved, watching the animals depart

Then the head elf, named Ava, turned with a start.

“Santa,” she said in a voice frightened and loud,

“But who’ll light the way through the fog and the clouds?”

“Rudolph’s so sick, and his nose light is low

Just then the sky around Santa’s head started to glow.

“Meet Sparky the firefly.” Santa said with a grin.

“And if his light’s not bright enough, he brought all of his kin.”

“Santa,” Ava asked as they both turned around

And looked at their team and the sleigh on the ground.

“Do you think they can do it? How will the sleigh run?

In the history of Christmas it has never been done.”

Santa thought for a moment then looked over his brood.

“It’s time to get ready, better get them some food.

And Ava, don’t worry, you have nothing to fear

I was once asked the same question of eight tiny reindeer.”

“We’ll put Erik and Salama at the front of the squad

Followed by Buford and Jake.” Santa said with a nod.

“Lu Si and Barakah will be next on the tether.

The last spots will be reserved for our two birds of a feather.

“We may not look normal; we may look bizarre

As we head off to the heavens and fly through the stars.

Why I’m not even sure the whole thing will fly

But I know that when night falls I can’t wait to try.

“So let’s get to work, there’s no time to lose,

These animals need to be ready to cruise.

There’s so much to do and the time’s getting tight.

I’ll meet you all back here at the first sign of night.”

The elves took the animals to the VIP stables

Where they ate and were pampered. Hey, they even had cable!

They were measured and brushed then dressed all in red.

They were readied for Santa and led to his sled.

They walked tall to their harnesses and as they were connected

They all stood at attention as Santa inspected...

He touched each animals face and he patted their heads,

“I can’t thank you enough,” was all that he said.

Then he entered his sleigh as the wind started to blow

And he lifted the reins and asked, “Are we ready to go?”

Each animal nodded without looking back

Santa ran through his checklist and rechecked his sack.

As the snow again sparkled down in the dark

Santa unlocked the break and nudged the sleigh out of park.

The sleigh started shaking as it moved up and down

And in no time at all was ten feet off the ground.

Then Santa remembered as he squinted to see

He’d brought along Sparky and his whole family.

As the fireflies flew around each animals head

“Light ‘em up Sparky!” Santa smiled and said.

In an instant the fireflies started to glow

And with the checklist complete they were ready to go.

For the first time in history on that Christmas Eve night

Santa’s sleigh was equipped with eight tiny headlights.

“Merry Christmas to all.” He yelled from his sleigh

As they soared to the stars and were well on their way.

“We’ll see you at first light with the dawn of the sun

When our sack is all empty and our mission is done.

So this Christmas Eve if you see high up in the sky

A moose or a penguin and a sleigh that can fly

With a polar bear, panda and a kangaroo too

It means all the reindeer have come down with the flu.

Just be thankful for animals. Oh yea and for St. Nick

Who will still bring Christmas to you...when the reindeer are sick.
