HOLD ON AND ENJOY THE RIDE

Sometimes life moves along so fast I think it is a shame
How everything is changing…how nothing remains the same.

It’s as if we’re on some crazy ride…and we’re riding in the dark
Up and down and round and round through life’s Amusement Park.

Within the last few days for instance if you’d seen the things I’ve seen
When it comes to understanding change you’d know exactly what I mean.

Deborah and I retired…to others our jobs we did bequeath
Ava turned another year older, then quickly lost two teeth.

The government shut itself down…many of us felt betrayed
That those who did the shutting down continued getting paid,

Yesterday in a hospital in Florida beginning in the early morn
Friends of ours were smiling watching their new baby being born.

While Tuesday in another hospital…add this story to the list
A friend of mine was having surgery to repair a broken wrist.

And today in the late afternoon as her parents fill with pride
The daughter of my childhood friends becomes a blushing bride.

I guess when you stop to realize…it’s really not that strange
Because all of life is transformation, all of life is change

Every moment of every day amidst our laughter and our cries
No matter what…the world is changing right before our eyes.

When I was younger, yes in my youth, I thought this changing thing was strange
I wished for certain moments to last forever and never change.

Of course I learned that can’t be so… that I was a little strange
To think the world would stop for me…when the world has got to change.

Now I like to think that life’s changes are filled with much more joy than pain
That our moments in the sun outlive our moments in the rain

Now I think of life and all its changes like a roller coaster we sit astride

And perhaps the best that we can do is hold on and enjoy the ride.
