I AM INSPIRED EVERY DAY

To help me cope with a vicious world…

where we seem stuck in this hate-filled quagmire…

I tend to look for…and happily find…people whose love inspires.

When surrounded by the news of people

whose hatred makes them think diversity, equity and inclusion

are evils to get rid of….

to assure myself there is still kindness and beauty in this world…

I look for signs of love.

Yesterday a man held the door to our bookstore open

for his wife who’s in a wheelchair…

and while his wife busied herself finding books…he had a story to share…

“My wife is and avid reader.” He said as he set some books on the counter

(at that time I counted four)

“Is it okay if I leave these here…I have no doubt she’ll be wanting more.”

One of the wonderful things about working in a bookstore

is you never know who you might meet…

He said they were originally from Minnesota…but they now live in St. Pete.

We had a pleasant conversation…

(where he never once mentioned his wife’s handicap)

When she finally rolled up to the counter she had four more books in her lap.

“I just love reading!” She said.

“At this point in my life…my husband and books are all I need.”

Then she smiled and said, “Since I can’t run or ski any more

it’s a good thing I love to read.”

Her husband said, “Let’s take a picture of all those books you’re going to read!”

and as he piled them into her lap…she happily agreed.

She beamed as she held all her books in her arms…

and as they slowly walked and rolled out the store…

I honestly could’t say…which one was smiling more.

Yes, with signs of hatred all around us…

today I was lucky enough to meet

two people whose love was planted up in Minnesota…

and is now blooming in St. Pete.
