We had dinner with our daughter, her daughter (our granddaughter) the other night
and before we had been fed.
my mind drifted to a time when our daughter was a child…afraid of monsters neath her bed.
When she would cry out, “Daddy! Daddy! Help me! There’s a monster under my bed.”
And I would ride in on my dragon, with my sword held high…and slay that monster dead!
“There will come a time you’ll tame your own dragon.” I remember telling her.
“I’ll teach you how one day
and together with your dragon…Oh! the monster you will slay.”
I remember telling her how that day is coming soon…but since I didn’t know exactly when…
‘You needn’t worry, Princess.” I said. “I shall stand guard till then,”
It’s been many years since the day I smiled as she proclaimed
“Dad! Dad! I did it! My dragon I have tamed.”
Many years I’ve watched proudly…through her pleasure and her pain.
as she sits confidently atop her dragon…and OH! The monsters she has slain.”
And though my dragon and I are a little slower than we were
when we slayed monsters neath her bed
I hope she knows we are ready, when she needs us,
to help slay any new monsters…dead.
Yes, it’s something that I learned all those years standing guard outside her bedroom door…
Helping save our princesses…is what dads and dragons were created for.
