OH DEER
In the 30 years we’ve been coming to the mountains…enjoying the beauty of the sky, the trees…the land…the number of deer we’ve actually encountered…can be counted on one hand.
Which is what makes the other night so extraordinary…one we’ll never forget…
It started on a mountain top…after watching the sun set.
As we coasted down the mountain….in the ever waning light…
we spotted them…a family of deer…in the grass off to our right.
We stopped the car to watch…as it became abundantly clear….
there was no one else on the mountain…except for the two of us and deer.
The young deer were frolicking…playing…bouncing, dancing without a care…
running back and forth between one another…jumping in the air.
We watched them for a few seconds…because in a few seconds they were gone…
but not before the last of them…a young white tailed fawn
(in an already amazing moment…we consider this a plus)
noticed we were watching her…and started watching us.
First she looked at Deborah…then she turned her eyes to me….
and I swear she nodded and I saw her smile…before she joined her family.
We didn’t take a picture of that moment…everything happened much too fast….
but the picture in our memories…is one, I’m sure, will last.
We can take away many spiritual meanings from this chance encounter…this unexpected meeting….the most important is to relish every moment in life…because every moment is fleeting…
We don’t know if we’ll ever happen upon a family of deer again…
but I know we will forever remember the date….
and…after 30 years of coming to the mountains…
it was definitely worth the wait.
