I loved the times when I was younger…and a little more carefree
Those days and nights when I would visit Grandma…or she would visit me.
There was magic in my grandma…at the time I thought only I could see…
magic in her smile and the way she read to me.
She’d let me choose the book…then snug and safe upon her knee
as if we were the only two people in the world…
my grandma read to me.
All the adventures we had…all the places we’d go…
all the wonders we would see
in those early days of my life…when my grandma read to me.
At first I thought the books contained the magic but soon I came to see
the magic was in my grandma…and the way she read to me.
Of course we read less and less as I grew too big to sit upon her knee
but I never forgot the feeling I had those times my grandma read to me.
When I heard she was sick..I wanted to see her before she died
so I gathered up those books she use to read to me…then…seated by her side.
I was determined to re-capture those moments
when we were younger…more carefree
revisit those old days and nights…when my grandma read to me.
We shared a smile…I made sure she was as comfortable as can be
then I read to her those same old books she once read to me.
I like to think our last moments together….were spent remembering who we were…
and enjoying who we came to be
as I read to my grandma….
the way she once read to me.
