We watched Grandma walk to the podium…
With tears filling her eyes…she looked up and smiled lovingly….
“I’d like to read a note.” She said
“before he became your dad and your grandpa…my husband gave to me.”
“I received this from him years ago…it was on our wedding day….
and just like me this note is a little older and more grey.
She gently placed her hand on the casket she now stood beside…
then opened the weathered old note and read the words inside.
‘I want to bring you light when you’re wrapped in darkness
comfort when you’re feeling pain
I want to be your shade when life gets too hot…
your umbrella in the rain.
I want to shield you from harsh winds...
be your warmth in the winter snow...
I want to stand proudly next to you when you’re feeling tall...
and pick you up when you’re feeling low.
I want your life to be filled with poetry
I’d like to be your rhyme...
What I’m trying to say is I want to love you...
until the end of time.’
She clutched the note and smiled at the casket,
“You did what you said you’d do.”
thank you…thank you…thank you
for making all my dreams come true.”
It was raining when were reached the cemetery….
Grandma allowed the raindrops to engulf her tears…
not once did she complain….
I imagine it was her way of beginning a life
without her umbrella in the rain.
