When we bought our house it was an empty shell
made of wood and glass and chrome…
It wasn’t until our family moved in
that we knew it was our home.
We were driving in our car yesterday…
a car made of metal and rubber and chrome
and, with two grandchildren in the back seat,
that Subaru felt like home.
We celebrated Aden’s birthday at a restaurant
where we sat in chairs made of rubber and chrome
and as we talked and laughed together
that restaurant felt like home.
We went to a movie theater.
We took up a whole row in the hippodrome,
and as I sat there surrounded by family
that theater felt like home.
That night we called our son
and as we talked to him on the phone
standing 600 miles apart
it felt like he was home.
And so I wonder:
Perhaps our home is not only our house
made of wood and glass and chrome…
Perhaps any place our family comes together
Perhaps that place…is also home.
