HER GARDEN IN THE SKY

I knew a girl when I was young
who had a disease I couldn’t pronounce.
She visited my memory recently
so part of our story...I’ll recount.

When the sun was up, her parents had no choice,
they had to keep her in,
for any exposure to the sun
would cause lesions on her skin.

So I would visit her at night
It was a special time of ours.
We would laugh and sing and play
and picnic under the stars.

But they were never stars to her.
She saw through a different set of eyes.
The moon became her sun
and the stars...her garden in the sky.

And she loved to play under those stars
and watch her garden grow.
She’d say, “I have the only garden in the universe
where flowers actually glow!”

She died at much too early an age…
when I think of her I still cry...
and I hope my tears float up to her in heaven
and water her garden in the sky.
