I taught Autistic humans for over 30 years…
and whether out in public or just walking around our school…
I saw first-hand how some humans who seem different
can cause some other humans…to be cruel.
My human students did not choose to be Autistic…
no more than we can choose our eyes to be brown, or blue…or green.
So why when some other humans saw them as different
did they choose to be so callous and so mean?
When I was teaching I often wondered why we so-called normal humans
are so afraid of other humans we think and act different than us….
and now retired, I still wonder today when it comes to humans
labeled LGBTQIA2 and +.
It seems to me every human in this world wants the same chances…
to live, to learn to grow, to feel accepted and to be free.
Free to be the humans we were put on this Earth to be.
But standing in their way are other humans who, because of bigotry and fear
refuse to acknowledge these other humans…
and are quick to say…you are not welcome here.
When humans fail to accept other humans for who they are
when they go out of their way to cause these other humans pain…
I’m left to wonder…in my sadness…
when did being human…become so in-humane?
I am still filled with hope however…
For I know, from my experience, if we humans took the time
to understand each other…to talk and laugh and play…
the fear that leads to our prejudice and hatred
would slowly slip away.
And when we see a human a little different from us…
whether out in public…or in school….
there would be no reason to fear their differences…
no reason to be cruel.
