We have a friend who we know is sad this Christmas
who can’t help but feel blue…
(I imagine some of you out there have a friend just like this too.)
When we see how sadness touches someone’s heart…
we search for the right words to say…
or something we can do…to make their sadness go away.
But sadness does not always heed the words spoken by you…or me.
Sadness has it’s own agenda…it’s own chronology.
So…when our words fail to soothe…or joy and laughter bring…
when a person we love is still engulfed in sadness…
we do the next best thing…
We sit in silence with them…we show them that we care.
We let them know…any time…any place…
when they need us…we’ll be there.
By our silent smile, touch…or hug…through their sorrow they will learn…
we will ride with them through their sadness…until their happiness returns.
And as future Christmases come and go…
we hope they will recall…
the Christmas we gave them our friendship…
perhaps the greatest gift of all.
