A little girl entered the store dressed as Rudolph…complete with antlers and a shiny red nose. And the moment I saw her I remarked, “My, how that nose of yours glows.”
“That’s because I am Rudolph!” She announced with her nose raised up and shining bright. “I’m ready to help Santa if it’s foggy on Christmas Eve night.”
“Well, Rudolph…with a nose that bright…I am confident when I say…even on the darkest and foggiest Christmas Eve…you’ll help Santa find his way.”
But seeing no sign of a fake nose…in my mind a question quickly came to light…
“I was just wondering,” I had to ask, “how did you get your nose so bright?”
“I used my mom’s red marker!” She said…(an idea, I imagine, she, herself, conceived) obviously proud of her ingenuity and the result she had achieved.
As she trotted off toward the Children’s books her mom gave me a wink…
“There’s only one little problem.” She whispered. “That red marker was permanent ink.”
“The good news is,” I whispered back…”and this I truly believe, her nose will still be shining next year….if Santa needs her on Christmas Eve.”
Her mom shrugged her shoulders, shook her head and then gave me one of this understanding mommy smiles…just as her little Rudolph…from the back of the store came prancing up the aisle.
I’m hoping for fog this Christmas Eve.” I said. “So Santa will say: ‘Rudolph with your nose so bright…won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
She smiled and waved as they exited the store leaving me to wonder if this little girl
so innocent and small…
with her nose a permanent red…
will now go down in history as the most famous reindeer of all.
