MY ADVICE

As I’ve watch people give and take advice here is something I’ve perceived…
Advice needs to be sincere when it is given and humble when it’s received.

I believe advice should cascade from ones lips like a snowfall to the young
Drifting gently from above so they can catch some flakes upon their tongue.

I create these little poems each day… I let them soar as each day dawns
and sometimes I am pleasantly surprised how far these rhymes have gone.

I recently received a comment from South Africa…a request to be precise
from a little boy who wants to be a poet… and who asked for my advice.

I wanted my advice to be, for him, both useful and appealing
So I told him poetry is when you paint with words
to express what you are feeling.

I told him to keep a notebook by his side
and when something elicits in him a smile or a frown
To take it out…open it up and write that feeling down.

And then I told him just to write…to write religiously…
The words that pour from out his heart…will be is his poetry.

He wrote back to say ‘thank you’
and I wondered in one so young…
how many of my words drifted down
and landed on his tongue.

WHAT CAN WE SAY?

What can we say to someone with cancer?
How can we brighten their day?
As they’re beginning their frightening journey what in the world can we say?

They’ve been to the doctors.
They’ve read all the literature.
They know what their cancer could do.
Perhaps we can help them by telling them… all the things that cancer can’t do….

We could tell them cancer cannot take away their memories.
With their sense of humor…cancer cannot elope.
It cannot poison our friendship…
or shatter our faith and our hope.

We could tell them cancer cannot blacken our souls.
How we won’t let it darken our days.
How it cannot dampen our spirits
and how we’ll be by there every step of the way.

And we can tell them cancer cannot diminish their courage…
because now they have something to prove…
that, perhaps, the reason the’ve been given this mountain…
is to show others how it can be moved.

Yes, when someone we love is battling cancer,
We do have a way to brighten their their day.
We share with them all the love in our heart…

And let our love find the right words to say.

DO YOU KNOW HOW BEAUTIFUL YOU ARE?

“Do you know how beautiful you are?” her grandma loved to say
“In fact”, she would continue, “you get more beautiful every day.”

“Grandma,” she said to her one day while feeling a little blue…
“You keep saying that I’m beautiful…but I don’t think it’s true.”

“I look in the mirror and try to see the beauty that you see…
But I don’t see a beautiful girl…all I see…is me.”

“Beauty is a funny thing,” her grandma said “you have to look at it differently…
because a person’s beauty…your true beauty…lies in what other people see.”

If you see the good in others you’ll be pleasantly surprised
They will say, I don’t know what its about her
but she has the most beautiful eyes.

If you speak kind words to others…in all your relationships
They will say, I don’t know what it is about her
but she has the most beautiful lips.

If you listen with respect and honesty
as people express their joys, their hopes, their fears…
They will say, I don’t know what it is about her
but she has the most beautiful ears.

If your touch is kind and gentle wherever it may land
They will say, I don’t know what it is about her
but she has the most beautiful hands.

If your smile makes others happy…even for a little while…
They will say, I don’t know what it is about her
but she has the most beautiful smile.

If you walk knowing you have friends and family who love you…
oh how everyone will talk
They will say, I don’t know what it is about her
but she has the most beautiful walk.

She was thinking of these words at her grandma’s funeral
when so many people came up to her to say…
I don’t know what it was about your grandma

but she got more beautiful every day.

PERSPECTIVE

I found out recently my body is making too many red blood cells
and although this news…I didn’t love it
It only means, every now and then, when it comes to my blood…
the doctor takes some of it.

So I’m in the doctor’s office as the doctor’s needle begins to take hold…
And I’m feeling a little sorry for myself…wondering…when did I get so old.

Then I look around the room I’m in and what should I happen to see
But 3 other men with needles in their arms…sitting next to me.

Only they weren’t having blood drawn…although stuck with a needle just like me
they were in for cancer treatments…hooked up to IV’s.

The man across from me was sleeping
the man in the corner was trying to find a way
to get comfortable. “Because”, he said,
“I’ll be her most of the day.”

When I smiled at the man sitting on my left he said, “It’s not as bad as it appears.”
“It’s something you get used to…I’ve been coming here 10 years.

I finished quickly and as I was leaving a man using a walker, barely clinging to life
struggled to walk in on his own…followed by his wife.

As I looked back I heard the wife say, “he’s cold”
and as the nurse pulled a blanket off the shelf
I felt a little ashamed…for feeling sorry for myself.

It’s true when I first sat down so they could take my blood
I was feeling a little blue…
but a little change of perspective
quickly changed my point of view.

As once again I was reminded
how life is a continuous quest
and I should think less about my troubles

and more about how I’m blessed.

HE WAS TOO BUSY

He was too busy dreaming of a much more wonderful life
That he forgot to take the time to enjoy his children and his wife.

He was too busy working…always on the go
That he forgot to be around…to watch his children grow.

He was too busy making money…
dreaming of that upward climb.
He forgot all his family ever needed…
all they ever wanted...
was his time

He was too busy dreaming…
as he looks back this makes him sad.
He was too busy dreaming of the life he could have had…

He was so busy dreaming of a life he never knew
he failed to recognize and enjoy his dreams
that already had come true.

He was to busy dreaming…
of a more successful, prosperous fate…
He was too busy dreaming…
and now it’s much too late.

SHE KNEW

The daughter suspected there was a problem…and found it quite upsetting.
when she began to notice how many little things her mother was forgetting.

Initially she thought it just old age…when she forget certain letters of the alphabet
until there seemed to be no end to the things she would forget.

She witnessed her decline with sadness knowing there was nothing she could do.
And she wondered how sad her mom would be…if she was seeing it too.

Until the day she found her mother surrounded by old photos…family albums too.
And when she saw tears streaming down her mother’s face…she realized…she knew.

It took a moment for her mom to recognize her…both faces showing the strain…
For how does one unveil love while concealing so much pain?

“So Momma, what are you doing?” she asked, her worse fears playing out,
“Surrounded by all these albums…with all these photos strewn about?”

“I don’t quite understand this” her mom said, “it’s all just too bizarre,
but when I look at some of these people…I can’t remember who they are!”

“I hoped if I studied these pictures…their names would come back to me…
and I’d remember them before they fall…through the holes in my memory.”

So she sat down next to her mother…whose life was slowly becoming a blur
and as they looked at every person in every picture…she helped her remember who they were.

But, despite doing everything in her power…everything she could think to do…
the holes in her mother’s memory grew so large…
eventually everyone fell through….

“I wonder in the end if your mom knew how much you loved her?”
her husband asked when it time came to bid her mom adieu…
She smiled…“Love is a feeling…not a memory.” she said.

“She knew”…I’m sure she knew.”

HEART AND HEAD

Here’s a question facing people every day…It’s certainly nothing new…
What do we do when we’re confused…and we don’t know what to do?

What do we do when we’re stuck in the middle…after everything’s been said?
When the message we’re getting from our heart…is different than from our head?

We search and search for the answer…some diagram, blueprint or chart…
but there is no map for our head to follow that will help to guide our heart.

We are destined to sometimes follow our heads…
Trying to do what we think is smart.
while other times we ignore our head
and listen to our heart.

Sometimes our decisions work out just fine
and we end up as happy as can be
other times our decisions
ends up in catastrophe.

But anything’s better than being stuck in the middle…
between the nightfall and the dawn
because good or bad once the decision’s been made
we’re able to move on.

It’s true we don’t know where our head or heart will lead us
as we open that next door
but whatever path we finally choose
will make us better than before.
