SHARE A SMILE

Today I’m honored to share with you a smile
and before the day is gone
please take this smile I am giving you
and kindly pass it on.

In a world with people so far apart…
because of our colors,
our shapes
our styles
perhaps the distances between us would shorten…

if we measured it in smiles.

CLIMBING TREES AND PETER PAN

When he was but a child his parents often smiled
when he wanted them to read him Peter Pan.
And when they read, “the end." he’d say, “Please, read it all again.”
“This time a little slower if you can.”

So they’d read it all again…and again and again and again
for that is what mothers and fathers do
because if it is loved by their son…and he is having fun
they find…they love it too.

When she was a but child her parents often smiled
when she wanted to climb their tallest tree.
She would climb up and down and then… say, “I want to climb again
there is still so much up there I want to see”.

So they’d watch her climb again…and again and again and again
for that is what mothers and fathers do
because if it is loved by their daughter…when they stand under that tree and spot her
they find…they love it too.

But sons and daughters grow…as all parents know
for life is nothing if not fleet.
The woman and the man move on from climbing trees and Peter Pan
and keeping up with what they love’s no easy feat.

So they watch and often worry as life seems to scurry
trying to love what they love too.
Their children may no longer heed them
but they will be there if they need them
for that is what loving parents do.

And though they’re sad life moves so fast…from the present to the past
there is one thing that keeps parents happy too…
As they ride life’s ebb and flow…they are overjoyed to know
the things their children love may change
but not the who.

And there will come a day…when they are old and grey…
(for this is exactly what parents do)
A day they’ll look back when they can…
and remember climbing trees and Peter Pan

and they’ll remember how they loved them too…

FINDING THEIR WAY BACK HOME

In spite of all his hopes and wishes and the many hours he would pray
he watched as the gleam in his father’s eyes as well as his memories faded away.

And even after his light went out and he no longer knew his name
when he was but a stranger to him…he’d visit…just the same

And he would tell him stories picked from his memory
of how he used to read him books as he sat upon his knee.

Of the times they’d play catch in their front yard
how he taught him how to swim
of all the times they were together
just his dad…and him

He’d remind him how he loved to play games
how it didn’t matter if he’d lose…or win..
he’d mention all the things they’d seen
and all the places they had been.

He would sit for hours…his stories flowing out with ease
and he felt blessed to be sharing…a lifetime of memories.

When asked why he sits for hours with a person who no longer knows his name
He simply smiles politely for his answer is always the same

“I’m reminding him of all the fun we’ve had
all the places we have roamed…
and since all these memories began with him

I’m making sure they find their way back home.”

THEIR SUPERPOWER

They wanted to be superheroes
They took their inspiration from the beauty and the softness of a flower
and understood their gentleness
and their kindness

is their superpower.

AT THE GATES OF HEAVEN

When we arrive at the gates of heaven
(or in whatever form of ‘heaven’ we might believe)
no doubt we will be joyous
perhaps we’ll feel relieved…

For the moment we step into our paradise
the reason…we will find..
was not what God we believed in
our sexual preference
or the color of our skin

but simply…being kind

THE ANSWER TO HER QUIZ

On the day her son was born…a day of happiness and joy
the doctor came to her bedside and said, “There’s a problem with your boy.”

“He will never be like other boys.” the doctor said
“You should think about finding him a permanent place to stay.
It will make your life so much easier…and he won’t be in the way.”

“I know just the place.” the mother said.
Where he’ll be happy and free to roam.
Then she thanked the doctor, packed their bags and took her baby home.

“You know it wouldn’t be easy.” the doctor said.
The mother smiled…. “Answer me this quiz:
When it comes to being easy..what life ever is?”

His teachers said it’s difficult for him to learn
that he has a short attention span…
“I know.” His mother smiled and said, “let’s just teach him what we can.”

“You know it won’t be easy.” the teacher said
The mother smiled…. “Answer me this quiz:
When it comes to being easy..what life ever is?”

All her life she’s worried about him
as all mothers do
anyplace he ever went
anytime he started something new.

And to everyone who told her it won’t be easy
she gave them this same quiz:
“When it comes to being easy,” she’d ask, “what life ever is?”

She worked to make his life meaningful
never thinking as the years passed in such a blur
that as she brought meaning into his life
he brought meaning into hers.

And though it wasn’t always easy…
What life ever is?
She’s glad from the beginning
she knew

the answer to her quiz.

THAT PERSON

When your world is bright and joyful
and light shines on all you see
look for the person smiling next to you
and know
that person
will be me.

and when your world is gloomy and joyless
and darkness is all you see
look for the person holding up a light
and know
that person

will be me.

MOCKINGBIRD LULLABY

MOCKINGBIRD LULLABY

Sometimes he walks before the town wakes up.
He walks a path down by the bay.
It’s usually quiet and serene…usually…but not this day.

Usually he walks in silence
where only the softest sounds are heard
that changed when he reached the center of town
and was confronted…by a bird.

A mockingbird began chirping loudly
then she flew around his head…
She stopped on the sidewalk in front of him…
“Follow me.” She said.

At least that’s what he thought she said.
After all…he didn’t understand a word
for he is just a man
and she…a mockingbird.

But he followed her across the street
where she landed in a tree
and as she kept chirping loudly he wondered
‘What does she want from me?’

He saw that she was in her nest
making bird sounds he’d never heard
and then he saw what she was fussing about…
On the ground…a baby mockingbird.

Her baby must have fallen
and here she came to rest
so gently…softly…he picked her up
and returned her to the nest.

The mother mockingbird thanked him
He could see it in her eyes
And he smiled as he walked away
listening to a mockingbird lullaby.

At least he thought it was a lullaby
After all…he didn’t understand a word
for he is just a man

and she…a mockingbird.

IT DOESN'T MATTER

They walk a different path each morning
as a new day’s begins to glow..
They fill a picnic basket and they drive
It doesn’t matter where they go.

They gather with their friends and family
to spend a moment or two.
sometime they sit
sometimes they eat
It doesn’t matter what they do.

They love to play any kind of games
their children and grandchildren might choose
It doesn’t matter if they win
It doesn’t matter if they lose.

If you ask them why it doesn’t matter
they have a simple reason why.
If you ask them why it doesn’t matter
they have but one reply…

You see…they know that life is short…and precious
and every moment they’re awake
it’s not the size of the memory that’s important

it’s how many they can make.

WHEN A HEART IS BROKEN

When a heart is broken…
at first it seems unbearable,
the world looks bleak
and grim
but sometimes it must break completely
to empty all of her…
or all of him.

For once a heart has been depleted…
and we think there’s nothing more…
that’s when we can piece it back together
even stronger than before..

Knowing what gives our heart it’s courage
it’s tenacity
its glue
are not only those who build it up

but those who break it too.

TWO HEARTS DANCING

The older couple captured everyone’s attention
the moment they all walked in the door…
but she’s the only one who did not laugh
as they danced across the floor

“They are not the greatest dancers are they?” her friend snickered…
“As far as dancing goes….
she keeps tripping on his feet
while he keeps stepping on her toes.”

“I’m not watching their feet.” she said
“No…what I find totally entrancing…
is the beauty on the faces

when I see their two hearts dancing.”

PERHAPS NOW IS THE TIME

Have you ever wanted to recapture the child you use to be?
Who would ride a bike out in the rain?
or climb the highest tree?

The child who believed in the magic of Santa Claus
Who never wondered why when you looked up on a moonless night
you saw starfish in the sky.

The child who discovered castles in the clouds,
who for no reason would start to sing,
who was able to find beauty in the tiniest of things?

Who….could sit for hours…upon hours
watching a butterfly
or a bee?
Whose world was one of love
and kindness
and generosity?

Have you ever thought
in a world that’s filled with hatred
with wars
and bigotry
that perhaps now is the time to recapture

that child we use to be.

DO YO BELIEVEIO IN GOD?

As they watched a field of flowers gently swaying in the breeze
sitting mesmerized and awed
A young girl looked at her dad and signed.
“Daddy, do you believe in God?”

Her father paused a moment
stroked the hairs upon her head
then looked into her eyes
“I do.” He signed and said.

“Do you ever wonder why,” she signed
as from her eye he saw a tear
“why God would put me into a world
in which I cannot hear”?

“When I think of all the sounds I’m missing…
all the music…all the songs…
I wonder…did I do something to hurt God’s feelings?
Did I do something wrong?”

“Oh no honey.” Her dad signed softly with his hands.
“Some things in life we just don’t know…
we may never understand.”

“None of us are perfect…I don’t think we’re meant to me
but you don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful to me.”

“When it comes to your hearing…I don’t know…
though an answer you are owed…
Perhaps it’s so you wan’t take for granted
the other gifts you’ve been bestowed.”

It’s true you have no hearing…
and that problem is severe
And you will never have the chance to hear
the beautiful things I hear…

“But perhaps without your hearing
you see the world with more clarity…
And there is a beauty in your silence that I will never see.”

“Someday, perhaps, we’ll have our answers…
Until then by however we view beauty may we be awed..
And know every time I see you…he signed

I see the hand of God.”

TWO FLOWERS

Can two flowers fall in love you ask…
when a heart they haven’t got?
But in love…if anything is possible…
I have to ask…why not?

Two flowers on opposite sides of a road…only a short distance away
a red rose and a white and yellow daisy…fell in love one day.

But they were separated by the road…where trucks drive by…and cars
destined never to be together….to love another from afar.

They both knew they were different…not birds of the same feather…
but that didn’t stop them from dreaming…how they might be together.

One day a little girl and her mom came walking
the sun was shining the sky was blue
“These flowers are so beautiful.” the little girl said…
“Mommy, may I pick a few?”

“These flowers are meant for everyone.” Mom said,
“not just for me and you.
but since summer’s almost over…
go ahead you may pick two.”

All the flowers stood up proud and tall…for flowers understand
the best place to end the summer is in a young girls hands.

I pick this one, the little girl said and she brought the daisy to her nose…
then crossing to the other side leaned down…and picked the rose.

Can two flowers fall in love you ask…
when a heart they haven’t got?
As they cuddled together in that little girls hands
I have to ask…

Why not?

IMAGINATION AND MEMORY

I never know what will happen…what memories I’ll see
but I love when my imagination merges with my memory.

My memory picks a person…sometimes quite randomly
and my imagination sets that person…right in front of me.

It happened at the end of a morning walk
in the shadow of our oak tree
When I looked up…Deborah’s mom…was smiling next to me.

And it was just as I remember…though she left us long ago
the way her smile lit up her face and set her eyes aglow.

I was unable to say a word…I was captivated…enthralled.
She did not speak either…but her smile said it all.

It reminded me how she loved us…with a love gentle and kind
and when I found my voice I thanked her for the memories she left behind.

I told her not to worry…standing in the shade of that old tree
for I am taking care of your daughter
and she’s taking care of me.

Silently she nodded her head…as the night surrendered to the dawn
We exchanged another smile….and in an instant…she was gone.

As I say…imagination is a wonderful thing
when it merges with a memory…
You never know what might happen…

You never know who you might see.

THE BUTTERFLY OR ME

I was walking in my yard when what should catch my eye
perched for a moment on a flower…but a blue butterfly.

I watched her flit from bud to bud…footloose and fancy free…
and I thought…I am aware of her…is she aware of me?

As she alights upon a flower…or flutters through the air…
does she know that she is beautiful..does she even care?

Is a butterfly capable of understanding?
Is she aware of time?
Are bigotry and hatred in a butterfly universe?
Does she worry about war or crime?

When she looks out on her world…
is she ever saddened…or appalled?
and I wondered…
is a butterfly
troubled by anything at all?

I watched her a while mesmerized
As she danced unrestrained and innocently
which made me wonder…
who's more blessed…
the butterfly…

or me?

IT IS OUR HEART THAT HOLDS THE KEY

He noticed her lips were quivering as she ran to him…
He saw the tears falling from her eyes
“He called me ugly, Daddy.” She cried.
“Can you please tell me why?”

A father never wants to see his daughter hurting
does not want to see her come to any harm.
So he closed his eyes and held her close
once she ran into his arms.

“It is his heart that’s ugly.” He said.
“For it is our heart that holds the key
as we gaze upon the world…
to how much beauty we will see.”

“I’m sad he called you ugly…
but sadder still...by far
his heart may never let him see…

how beautiful you are.”

OLS MAN WALKING

As they watch the old man walk by each day at his slow but steady pace
They often comment on his peculiar gait…or the smile on his face.

They wonder what he’s up to…they certainly want it known
who the old man might be talking to as he walks by on his own.

If they ask him…he would tell them…as he is walking through…
His wife, who he misses every day, is who he’s is talking to.

How they used to walk each morning together…along this very way
and how he loves to fill her in on all that happened yesterday.

He would tell them not to worry…and he’d certainly want it known

the reason for his smile is…he never walks alone.

THE YOUNG GIRL AND THE ROSE

The lone rose never asked for much
and never once complained…
She was happy when the sunlight reached her
and when her petals filled with rain.

She grew outside the young girls window
and always found a way
to stand a little straighter
when the young girl smiled her way.

Not once did the young girl forget her…
for every day she chose
to open her window, smile, wave
and say, “Good Morning!” to her rose.

And they were happy with their relationship…
It made the girl and her rose glow…
until the change of seasons
and the fall winds began to blow..

Soon it would be winter
When her single rose would die
and so the young girl and the rose
prepared to say goodbye.

“What can I do for you?” The young girl asked
“since you’ve given so much to me?
The rose had but one request
“Can you take me to the sea?”

“I’ve seen the sun, the moon the stars
I’ve seen the birds the trees and more…
but I would love once before I’m gone
if I could see the shore.”

And so they traveled to the shore
to where the ocean meets the sky…
and here they sat and watched the waves

and it was here they said goodbye.

FOOTPRINTS AND SANDPIPERS

FOOTPRINTS AND SANDPIPERS

On a recent walk along the beach…where the ocean meets the land
what captured my attention were all the footprints in the sand.

We watched sandpipers darting to and fro
tiptoeing between the water and the land
pursuing their next meal…leaving tiny footprints in the sand.

We saw people walking, families playing, children making castles with their hands.
while others laughed, or ran, or skipped…leaving footprints in the sand.

It wasn’t just how many there were…spreading out across the land
It was also the diversity…of those footprints in the sand.

I kept wondering…were they young or old…
gay or straight
black or white…
was it a woman or a man
who walked this beach before us and left these footprints in the sand?

As you walk along the beach you feel a harmony
with the sky…the sea…the land…
and that day I felt that same harmony with those footprints in the sand.

And I had to smile as we walked…thinking…wouldn’t it be grand…
if the only way to judge a person…was by their footprints in the sand?

Would there be prejudice and bigotry?
Would people be ridiculed…or banned
If the only way to judge them was from their footprints in the sand?

And I wondered if we should all be more like sandpipers
who, as they scamper, dash and stand,
tread softly
and live in harmony…
while making footprints in the sand.

Who understand the key to life
is to live nobly
and dignified
and grand…
before our time is up
and the tide washes away

our footprints in the sand.
