A MIRACULOUS DAY

Yesterday was a miraculous day!

and miraculous days, trust me, you don’t want to miss them.

Our day was filled with so many miracles…bear with me as I take a few…and list them:

I woke up next to Deborah…yes I opened up my eyes.

I got dressed, took a walk and wrote a poem about dragonflies.

Not long after I returned home…and walked through our front door…

I woke up Deborah who got dressed…and then we walked some more.

On a windy morning we watched as birds floated on the wind like balloons.

We watched clouds of all shapes and sizes run quickly pass the moon.

We ate cereal for breakfast then watched as the sky turned gray.

We greeted a cardinal at our bird feeder, followed by a woodpecker and blue jay.

We checked the caterpillars on our milkweed…to see if they were still alive.

As of yesterday morning we’re happy to say…the count was up to five.

We worked on crossword puzzles (it helps stimulate our 71 year old brains)

We picked tomatoes from our garden, read books, took naps and listened to the rain.

We had dinner at Nancy and David’s house where we talked for hours

like old friends around a campfire…sitting on a log.

They served asparagus lasagna and key lime pie…and we got to pet their dogs!

These are but a few of the miracles we experienced yesterday…

For those of you who may be skeptical that these are miracles…

listen to what Albert Einstein had to say.

You may remember Einstein was a theoretical physicist…a prodigy, a genius… a whiz

He said: there are two ways to live your life…

one is as though nothing is a miracle…

the other is as though everything is.

Yes, you can live your life as if nothing is a miracle…as if all the little things don’t matter

but when it comes to miracles and life and Einstein…as for Deborah and I…

we prefer the latter..

THANKFUL FOR ALL MEMORIES

Today I’m thankful for memories…

All memories are dear to me…

Especially the ones I’ve been blessed to share

with my friends and family.

ROLLER COASTER MEMORIES

How many times have we heard: life is like a roller coaster?

from its ups and downs we cannot hide.

As we navigate these highs and lows…

we do our best to enjoy the ride.

Our memory records each ride we make…wherever we happen to go…

allowing us at any time to remember every high and every low.

When friends and family get together…as we do every now and then…

how quickly we get back in line…to ride those memories again.

Remembering with joy and laughter as higher and higher our memories go.

Remembering with tears and sadness when the roller coaster dips down low.

The thing that makes our roller coaster so enjoyable…

is not only how every day our experiences and memories have grown…

but…with all the seats available…we never have to ride alone.

How wonderful it is to hear…as those memories rise and fall…

before they slip away…

how all the people on the ride shared in such a beautiful day.

Because the best memories we have are of our friends and family

laughing screaming…riding with our hands high in the air…

The best memories are the memories we’ve made together…

the memories we share.

THANKFUL FOR DRAGONFLIES

Today I’m thankful for dragonflies.

We find them by ponds, in lakes in rivers and by streams.

I love how the first people to populate this land believed

dragonflies were the deliverers of dreams.

And I particularly love this indigenous point of view:

If a dragonfly sits on your shoulder…

all your dreams will come true.

DRAGONFLY PARTY

On our walk the other morning as we reached the water’s edge…much to our surprise

there among the usual animals…we saw a swarm of dragonflies.

Flying around us willy-nilly…apparently without a care.

Looking left and right and up and down…we saw dragonflies everywhere.

Seemingly out of nowhere…these dragonflies appeared…

which made us wonder…what in heaven’s name could they be doing here!

Is there a dragonfly convention in town?

Are they’re searching for salvation?

Perhaps they are college dragonflies down here on a spring break vacation.

It was hard to follow them…they moved so fast…

our heads were constantly spinning…

but we swear if we listened closely…we could hear those dragonflies singing.

Their raucous revelry and merrymaking got us both to thinking:

What was in the morning dew those dragonflies were drinking?

We never got the chance to ask them because before we knew it…they moved on…

One minute they were there…the next minute…they were gone.

But we did learn some new things on our walk:

Although dragonflies look frail…they are fun-loving…and hearty…

and

When they’re not flying around hunting insects…

we learned..

dragonflies love to party.

THANKFUL FOR UNEXPECTED GIFTS

Today I’m thankful for unexpected gifts

their praises I now sing…

for we never know how much joy and happiness

One unexpected gift will bring

STACY'S KEYS

Deborah and I were at a party recently.

The kind of party where wine and friendship flow with ease.

When the partying was over and it was time to leave…

Stacy, a friend of ours, could not find her keys.

We retraced her steps…we searched high and low..

we looked wide…and we looked far…

until a voice inside my head told me to look underneath our car.

And so…with the phone as my flashlight…I got down on my hands and knees

and, sure enough, underneath our car…there were Stacy’s keys.

She must have dropped them as soon as she arrived at the party…

as best we could infer…

and I didn’t see them when I pulled in over them and parked right next to her.

Needless to say Stacy was relieved, ecstatic…

her heart rate returned to normal…her mind was now at ease…

and this should be the happy ending to the saga of Stacy’s keys.

But a few weeks later, during Easter, I was filled with much elation

when Stacy gave me a chocolate bunny…to show her appreciation.

Yes, Stacy got her keys back…which, of course, has a certain appeal

but I got a chocolate bunny…you tell me…who got the better deal!

It seems to me those unexpected things we do for friends…

no matter how big or small…

In life…these are the most precious…the most endearing gifts of all.

And I had to smile as I savored that chocolate bunny…

knowing this fact to be true….

Yes, I’m the one who found Stacy’s keys…

But…when you think about it, I’m the one who hid them too.
