PAREIDOLIA

Pareidolia is when we see familiar faces where they’re not supposed to be…

Like Abe Lincoln in a cloud, the Virgin Mary in a piece of toast

or Albert Einstein in a tree.

Because our mind has a way of taking random bits of information and filling in the blanks…and at Christmas time every year…for Pareidolia…I give thanks.

Take these random bits of information…

I’m old, I have a white beard and if I happen to be wearing the color red…

when children see my wrinkled face and a stocking cap upon my head

more often than not they stop in their tracks…sometimes it’s just a pause…

when their mind put all this information together and they think I’m Santa Claus.

It happened the other night in the bookstore…

when a little girl saw me behind the counter…and immediately paused…

“Mom,” I heard her whisper, “I think that’s Santa Claus.”

“Don’t be silly.” Her mom said showing a modicum of parental self-control.

“What would Santa be doing in Florida in December

when there’s so much to do at the North Pole?”

Her mom grabbed her hand and they headed off down to the Children’s aisle…

but not before the girl glanced back at me…and I gave her a wink and then a smile.

‘Shh.” I whispered as I put a finger to my lips…I imagine just like Santa would.

She smiled back then nodded…as if she understood.

As her mom was browsing in the store she came up to the counter,

leaned over and whispered tenderly…

“Don’t you worry, Santa. Your secrets safe with me.”

I’ve been blessed to have a wonderful life…

I have so much to be thankful for…

many times by good fortune I’ve been kissed…

and for a few weeks around Christmas every year…

I add Pareidolia to that list.

Yes, for a few weeks every December…

you might say I’m a little jollier…

because…

a few children here in Florida

believe I’m Santa Claus.

CHRISTMAS LIST

Here’s something about Christmas our parents never told us…but something we’ve come to know…our Christmas list gets shorter and shorter the more and more we grow.

‘Dear Santa’ we wrote when we were young, ‘I’ve been good this year…the kind of child parents adore…and on the following pages you will find all the toys I’m asking for.

When we become a teenager…as all children do…

Our list shortens to money, or clothing…perhaps a gift certificate or two.

Our perspective changes when we become adults…with a family…a partner…a wife…our Christmas list is that our friends and family be healthy…

free from evil…free from strife.

We don’t know exactly when it happens…but somewhere in the course of the life we’re living…the joy we felt from receiving gifts….turns into the joy of giving.

Then we reach an age when we smile…thinking how through the years our wishes have decreased…and we are left with one…we wish for a world at peace.

A world of love and acceptance…without hatred or the need for war and guns…

where all 6 billion different people finally realized…we are 6 billion…but we are one.

Santa, we write, I know this is a tall order…this one wish I’m sending you…

but for someone who visits 6 billion people in one night…

I believe it’s something you can do!

And If you make this one wish come true…

if next year we are fortunate enough to live as one in a world of peace and joy…

on my Christmas list next year…

I believe you’ll find some toys.

HERE'S TO MORE BILLET-DOUXS

One of the fringe benefits of working in a rare book bookstore is I get to hold and see…books that were published in the 1890’s…books twice as old as me!

More often than not in these rare old books I’ve come to understand

when I open the cover I’m going to find a dedication…written by someone’s hand.

Some dedications are short…some long…most likely written with a pen…ink dipped…

and most are signed…’with love’ in a beautifully flowing script.

Today we communicate with each other so much faster…but not necessarily better…

for often lost in fast lane of life is the artistry of the love letter.

A letter where we take the time to think about a person…where in our hearts we look…and find the words then write a note…like those found in rare old books.

Taking the time and writing a letter is an art form all its own…

and when read by the intended person…where the seeds of love are sown.

Any word or phrase sounds better in French…at least I find that to be true…

and the French have a beautiful word for love letter…they call it the billet-doux.

Why, in today’s world, you may ask, should we take so long to write a letter that moves with the speed of a snail?  Because nothing compares to the feeling one gets when they receive a love letter in the mail.

And don’t be afraid of the word love…because when it’s another person you’re thinking of…any note or letter or dedication in a book you send…is an act of love.

There is a euphoria one feels when they receive a personal note…

knowing you took the time to write it…and you thought about what you wrote.

Knowing it was written for our eyes only…not for the entire world to see..

gives the billet-doux a feeling of warmth…of friendship…of closeness…of intimacy.

Yes, as the world seems to move faster and faster…there is one way to fight it…because the greatest gift of any love letter…is the time we take to write it.

So here’s to writing more love letters…just imagine all the people out there who….

would love to receive a letter from you…their very own billet-doux.

LEARNING HOW TO RIDE

LEARNING HOW TO RIDE

As Christmas gift giving approaches it seems appropriate to me t

hat many children will find a bicycle underneath their Christmas tree.

Remember learning how to ride a bike…can you still remember how it feels?

The day your parents plopped you on the seat…thank God for training wheels.

Then came the day that changed for world…a day we must all face as we grow…

The day we came to realize…the training wheels must go.

Remember your mom and dad running behind you…hearing their encouragement…their groans…remember looking back…seeing them in the distance and smiling…

you were riding on your own!

You felt alive…excited…you thought this bike riding is a piece of cake…

until you realized they taught you how to ride a bike…

but never taught you how to brake.

You saw the world differently atop your bike…you learned a lot of lessons then…

like every time you fall…to get back up and ride again.

You learned to be confident in yourself…you gained a sense of pride….

perhaps you thought how much your life had changed the moment you learned to ride.

Or, perhaps, you didn’t think about how life changes…you were too busy being you…but as you grow a little older there will come a time…you do.

You’ll think how a baby changes daily…how in no time they’re learning how to crawl…

as easily as the cooling breezes of summer turn into the chilly winds of fall.

We blink and that baby is riding a bike…then a teenager on the go…

as quickly as those falling leaves of autumn turn into the falling winter snows.

That teenager becomes an adult with all the wonders and responsibilities that brings…as quickly as the winter cold turns into the warmth and colors of spring.

Yes, change surround us…it’s inevitable…and though we may not understand why…without it that caterpillars growing inside us would never become a butterfly.

Since life will not slow down for us…no matter how many time we’ve tried…

I think learning how to ride a bike helps prepare us for the ride.

“How can riding a bike prepare us for all the changes in life.” You scoff.

Because it helps us find the courage, the determination and the confidence…

once our training wheels come off.

So if you give a bicycle this Christmas…remember it will help your child stay balanced…and how to learn from their mistakes…

and before they start riding on their own…

you might want to tell about the brakes….

IN BLACK AND WHITE

One of the reasons I like walking in the morning…with only the moon and stars for light

is how a world of daytime color is reduced to black and white.

It’s when the jumbled clamor of daytime sounds have all but faded away

It’s when the crickets are serenading and the rabbits come out to play.

Away from most distractions I can renew my self-esteem

It’s easier to think…so much easier to dream.

Today as an old man walking…after all the years I have compiled

I was thinking back and dreaming…what it was like to be a child.

It’s those first steps toddled across the floor, arms extended…ending in an embrace.

It’s not caring how that ice cream your eating is messing up your face.

It’s eating moon pies…anything chocolate…it’s splashing barefoot in a mountain stream.

It’s catching fireflies around a campfire…I forget…did I mention the ice cream.

It’s never being in a hurry…but how your focus changes quick…

It’s throwing pebbles in a lake…or playing for hours with a stick.

It’s admiring every flower…waving to the engineer on a passing train.

It’s catching snowflakes on the tip of your tongue…it’s dancing in the rain.

It’s pretending you’re a bird or an airplane…and spreading your wings to soar…

it’s walking barefoot in the sand and playing tag with the waves along the shore.

It’s running as fast as you can…not afraid of falling…it’s taking pride in all your scars

It’s lying on your back in the grass and counting all the stars

So as I finished my walk this morning…in the moon and star’s fading light

about to return to a world of color…I once again said good-bye to the black and white

But not before remembering every piece of this mornings dream…

and knowing sometime today I’m going to eat a moon pie…

and I’m going to top it with ice cream.

ENCHANT

It’s called ENCHANT…the world’s largest holiday light event experience…with a 100 foot tall Christmas tree…Since it was in St. Pete we decided this is one light show we have to see.

As we entered we were greeted by a truly wondrous sight…

immediately surrounded by music and completely immersed in lights.

Santa, his reindeer, and Mrs. Claus were there to add to the joy we were feeling…

A constantly changing rainbow of lights was everywhere we looked…there were even blue whales hanging from the ceiling.

But what made this evening special to us…enhancing its already wondrous charm…

was when he happened upon a young mother and father with their newborn in their arms.

Their smiles were enough to illuminate the stadium…they didn’t need 4 million lights.

Their baby, only one month old, was swaddled in an outfit of red and white.

I was born and raised in the Catholic religion…in Ohio…close to the Bible Belt…

so my first thought was to wonder if they were feeling what Joseph and Mary felt.

We paused a while to talk with them…then calling on the vast experiences we’ve amassed…Deborah advised them to enjoy every moment with their son…because he will grow up so fast.

As the two of us silently left the light show…together…hand in hand…

I smiled knowing the wisdom she shared with that young couple…they will one day understand.

There will come a day the two of them…like the two of us…with children now fully grown…

will, perhaps, be attending the largest holiday light experience…together…on their own.

It is a fine line we walk as parents…wanting our children to develop…praying they will grow…but every now and then wishing time would stop…or at least…for a moment…slow.

Which reminds me of when an old couple was asked…

What’s the happiest part of raising a family…this was their reply…

The happiest part of raising a family is watching them grow up and change as time goes by….

And when asked what’s the saddest part of raising a family…

They smiled and just as quickly exclaimed…

The saddest part of raising a family…

Why our answer is the same.

THE YEAR OF THE NO REINDEER FLU RETURNS

WELCOME TO DECEMBER…

If it’s December it’s time for the return of this annual tradition

This tradition can either be passed on from year to year or…

you can pass on it…

the choice is yours.

THE YEAR OF THE NO REINDEER FLU…

From the city of No in the south of Japan…

came a flue bug…but it didn’t cause the flu in one man…

or one woman for that matter…No, the virus that year

only caused flu symptoms in Santa’s reindeer.

Two weeks before Christmas that bug went on a roll

and soared up the coast straight to the North Pole.

The reindeer’s eyes watered and their noses…they blew

for this was the year of the No Reindeer Flu.

“Santa!” Cried Mrs. Claus, “what are we to do?

All of our reindeer have come down with the flu.

Rudolph’s nose is all stuffy, it is not shining red,

he and the others are all sick in their beds.

They’re too ill to get up, and their fevers are high,

they’re cold and their achy…why, they’ll never fly.

They can’t help you on Christmas Eve…not this sickly old group.

They’ll be resting and drinking my hot chicken soup.

It’s a cinch you can’t pull the big sleigh by yourself.

So what will you do…my once jolly old elf?”

Santa thought for a moment, then said, “Send out the word

this year Santa’s looking for an entire new herd!”

“Tell all the world’s animals,” and Santa started to beam,

“tomorrow we pick a new sleigh pulling team.

Tell them we need help on this one Christmas Day.

Tell them the reindeer are sick…and to bring resumes.”

As the news spread all over the world on that day

many animals came…you could’t keep them away.

When they heard Santa’s in trouble, they all caught a ride

To the North Pole they came…from far…and from wide.

There were tigers from Burma and llamas from Peru

There were yaks from Nepal and goats and cows too.

They came by the hundreds. They came every which way

just for the chance to pulls Santa’s sleigh.

Santa interviewed every animal who came

no matter how big, how little…how wild or tame.

and after screening and searching the entire collection

Santa was ready to make his selection.

“The choice wasn’t easy…everyone was so great,

but as you all know…I can only pick eight.

So will the following animals please wander up here.

You’ll be subbing tonight for my ailing reindeer.

Salama from Africa…I’m proud to declare

you’re one elephant I can’t wait to see fly through the air.

And Erik the moose from the land of Norway

I believe you have some experience pulling a sleigh.

Barakah the polar bear from off in the distance

tonight of all nights I could use your assistance.

And Jake from Australia, that’s right, the red kangaroo

come on up, and by all means, bring your didgeridoo.

Isabella the rhea…now please don’t you cry

I just think it’s about time you learned how to fly.

Next, Buford, the buffalo, from out on the plains…

thank you for coming, we can sure use your brains.

And Priscilla, the penguin, you already know how to fly.

you soar under the ocean, now let’s try the sky.

Lu Si, the panda, from China…yes…you.

I’ve alerted the elves to find some bamboo.

There you have it my friends! I think we are through.

I have made my selection of Santa’s new crew.

Shout out the good news from every rooftop and basement…

Santa has found himself eight reindeer replacements.”

Then Santa turned to the crowd that had gathered around,

He raised up his hand…and they quieted down.

As the cold of the North wind showed up on his cheeks

He smiled and nodded…then started to speak.

He thanked them for coming…he shook every hoof

and when he was finished…he jumped on the roof.

“Thank you again,” he said as it started to snow.

“I will always be grateful…and now you must go.”

“For their isn’t much time…why I can’t believe

How can it already…be Christmas Eve?

There’s so little time and there’s so much to do

We’ve got eight animals to get ready…and toys to pack too.”

Then remembering the animals assembled about

He didn’t want them to feel bad…to be sad…or to pout.

So he winked at the elves and his beard he did stroke…

Then he turned to the animals and once again spoke.

“To thank you for coming, the least we can do

Is to make your trip home…fun and easy for you.”

Then the snow began sparkling as it fell from the sky

and all of the animals started to fly.

“Thank you my friends.” He said to the hovering pack.

To show you my gratefulness…you may all now fly back.

You came from as far off as China and Rome

the least I can do is to help you fly home.”

The animals cheered and they laughed and as the snow fell they cried.

They soared and they dove…and some learned how to glide.

The sky at the North Pole came alive on that day

as thousands of animals all flew away.

Everyone waved, watching the animals depart

Then the head elf, named Ava, turned with a start.

“Santa,” she said in a voice frightened and loud,

“But who’ll light the way through the fog and the clouds?”

“Rudolph’s so sick, and his nose light is low…

Just then the sky around Santa’s head started to glow.

“Meet Sparky the firefly.” Santa said with a grin.

“And if his light’s not bright enough…he brought all of his kin!”

“Santa,” Ava asked as they both turned around

and looked at their team and the sleigh on the ground.

“Do you think they can do it? How will the sleigh run?

In the history of Christmas…it has never been done!”

Santa thought for a moment then looked over his brood

“It’s time to get ready, better get them some food.

And Ava, don’t worry, you have nothing to fear

I was once asked the same question about eight tiny reindeer.”

“We’ll put Erik and Salama at the front of the squad,

followed by Buford and Jake.” Santa said with a nod.

“Lu Si and Barakah will be next on the tether.

with the last spots reserved for our two birds of a feather.

“We may not look normal; we may look bizarre…

as we head off to the heavens and fly through the stars.

Why I’m not even sure the whole thing will fly

but I know that when night falls I can’t wait to try.

“So let’s get to work. There is no time to lose.

These animals all need to be ready…to cruise.

There’s so much to do and the time’s getting tight

I’ll meet you all back here at the first sign of night.”

The elves took the animals to the VIP stables

Where they ate and were pampered…Hey! They even had cable!

They were measured and brushed and dressed all in red.

They were readied for Santa and led to his sled.

They walked tall to their harnesses and as they were connected

they all stood at attention as Santa inspected.

He touched each animal’s face and patted their heads,

“I can’t thank you enough.” was all that he said.

Then he entered his sleigh as the wind started to blow

and he lifted the reins and asked, “Are we ready to go?”

Each animal nodded without looking back.

Santa ran through his checklist and rechecked his sack.

As snowflakes again sparkled down in the dark

Santa unlocked the brake and nudged the sleigh out of park.

The sleigh started shaking as it moved up and down

and in no time at all was ten feet off the ground.

Then Santa remembered as he squinted to see

he’d brought along Sparky and his whole family.

As the fireflies flew around each animals head.

“Light ‘em up Sparky!” Santa smiled and said.

In an instant the fireflies started to glow

And with the checklist complete they were ready to go.

For the first time in history on that Christmas Eve night

Santa’s sleigh was equipped with eight tiny headlights.

“Merry Christmas to all!” He yelled from his sleigh

As they soared to the stars and were well on their way.

“We’ll see you at first light with the dawn of the sun

When our sack is all empty and our mission is done.

So this Christmas Eve if you see high in the sky

A moose or a penguin and a sleigh that can fly

with a polar bear, panda and a kangaroo too

It means all of the reindeer have come down with the flu.

Just be thankful for animals…Oh…and for jolly Saint Nick…

who will still bring you Christmas…

when the reindeer are sick.

THE END
