A POEM MOSTLY ABOUT MEN BUT MAINLY FOR WOMEN

On the eve of International Woman’s Day
a message for men and women to be unfurled
First to the men who think they are superior…
who think they rule the world…

It’s a message about your power
It’s a message about your fame…
It’s a message about your responsibility
It’s a message about your shame.

Instead of taking responsibility for your actions
you find reasons and ways to escape them…
You blame wars on your religion,
violence on your guns
you even blame the women once you’ve raped them.

But you are the ones who start our wars
(these are facts you cannot escape)
you are the ones who shoot and kill
you are the ones who rape.

If you have the power to carry out these behaviors
you also have the power to amend them…
Which means…
the wars
the killing
the raping
you have the power to end them.

But you refuse to take responsibility
It’s someone else fault…you claim
and you continue finding reasons
and other people you can blame….

Because when you look at your actions and behaviors
you try desperately to defend them…
and the wars, the killing and the raping continue
as you wait for someone else to end them.

And here is where this poem goes out to women
and here is the message to be unfurled…
You’ve known all along you are superior

perhaps it’s time you ruled the world!

SACK LADY

With all her possessions in sacks in her wagon she is homeless…we assume
and we wonder how one lives without a house
without four walls…
without a room.

We often see her in the morning as we take our daily walk.
We’ve tried to engage her in conversation…but never will she talk.

She turns her back when she sees us coming…the moment we appear
and we walk away in sadness….wondering…how did she get here?

Living on our streets and benches as basic human contact she eludes.
How does she bathe?
Where is her family?
What does she do for food?

Our Florida winters are mild but as the days unfold
we have our share of thunderstorms
we have our share of cold…

And what does she do in summer
when she’s living on the street
when under a tree or awning
are the only places to escape the heat?

I know everyone’s life has a story
from birth to death and all times in between
but I can’t imagine in her youth
this is the ending she’d foreseen.

We don’t know what to do for her
this lady with all her sacks
so every time we see her we smile
in the hope she’ll smile back…

And that smile perhaps will lead to acceptance of the the friendship we’re extending…
and a chance to change the story of her life

into a happy ending.

THEY SIT TOGETHER

They sit together in silence
often I have seen them….
for theirs is the kind of love that speaks

without a word passing between them.

HIS OLD HOUSE

He loves to walk inside his old house when everyone’s asleep
When the world around is so quiet you cannot hear a peep.

For in the quietude of slumber when the bats and fireflies thrive
is the time within the walls of his old house when memories come alive.

Memories of laughter and tears echo off the walls
Memories of his children and grandchildren echo down the halls.

Sometimes he stops to listen…sometimes…to different rooms he’s drawn
as he marvels at his old house…where his world has come and gone.

Today as he takes his final walk…
his children are grown…
his wife is gone
He packs up every memory…he knows it’s time for moving on.

He will take his memories with him but he knows some will linger in these walls
which he will gladly share with the new owners when another nighttime falls.

And he hopes as these new owners walk these halls when everyone’s asleep
when the world around is so quiet you cannot hear a peep

That he or she will stop and listen…smile…and be so kind

as to allow the new memories they are making to mix with those he leaves behind.

PASSPORT PHOTO

Our daughter and her husband turn 40 this year…and we have wonderful news
To celebrate their special day…we’re going on a cruise!

We’ll be floating down to Cuba…yes, new memories we’ll add
but as good as this news is to hear…now…here comes the bad.

We need to have our passports renewed to visit this new place
Which means I had to take a picture…a close up of my face.

I’ve decided after a certain age no camera should ever get this close
I’m not sure what has happened…my features seem so gross.

Is my head really shaped lie this?
And much to my chagrin…are my eyebrows always this bushy?
What are those spots upon my skin?

Spots and wrinkles…wrinkles and spots…I see them everywhere
perhaps they’d be more hidden if I only had more hair.

Is it just the passage of time or am I a casualty of fate?
For my nose sees to have gotten bigger at a dangerously alarming rate

Why is one eye drooping?
When did those bags under my eyes appear…
And those huge things on the side of my head
Oh my God! Could those be ears?

Is this is how the world sees me
with exaggerated features and wrinkled skin?
If so…when we get to Cuba I think I’ll wear an oversized hat

and hope they let me in.

ONE MOMENT

The moment they met neither of them knew…
nor could they possibly see…
how meaningful
how momentous
how forever

that single moment would be

WITHOUT HER

With the memory of her death still fresh in his mind
he pauses to think about her…
and he wonders…
if the world will always be this quiet
and this lonely…

without her.
