BIG SISTER

I’m not sure what you were at first…
you never went away.
you made all kind of noises
and you laid around all day…

Mom and Dad seemed to like you
and when you smiled…that was fun
but with you in the house I had to share
I was no longer number one.

Then you started following me
and soon enough I found
I didn’t mind sharing them with you
in fact I liked having you around.

We have a unique opportunity
you, little brother, and me…
we get to practice on each other
the people we will be.

You will come to me when you need help
and right off the bat I want it known…
although I won’t solve all your problems
you won’t have to face them alone.

I wasn’t so sure about you at first
but now my feelings are quite strong…
I kind of like when you follow me…
I’m glad you came along

And I will do my best to encourage
to love and to comfort you
for I am your big sister

and that’s what big sisters do

THE DAY THEIR DREAM BEGAN

Their love has been a blessing.
some would say…
a work of art…
whenever
and
wherever they walk
their hands are never far apart…

They have always shared their laughter,
their tears
their hopes
their fears
their dreams…
and have often wondered if love
is
as easy as it seems…

They have shared their dreams forever
at least…
as long as anybody can
and they love to look back
and remember

the day their dream began…

THE SILENCE OF THE CROWS

We are blessed to walk in nature where everyday her routine unfolds before our eyes
but every now and then we’re blessed when she gives us a surprise.

Each morning like clockwork thousands of crows set forth
crossing the sky just above us…as they head out south to north..

We usually hear them before we see them…in loud gatherings they fly
calling out to one another as they nonchalantly flutter by.

Today a strong wind was blowing which meant those intelligent crows
with an understanding of aerodynamics…would be flying rather low…

We watched them skimming neath the wind almost touching the water…
or just above the ground
and were amazed how this line of normally boisterous crows…never made a sound.

We could hear ropes hitting masts of ships in the marina
sounds the wind makes when she blows.
We could hear the waves crash upon the shore…
but we never heard the crows.

And when the crows are silent…when they’re as quiet as a kite
We are treated, in that silence, to the beauty of their flight.

Flying and talking to one another…the beauty of their harmony flows
but there is also quiet beauty in the silence of the crows.

Some of nature’s beauty is in her routines…
her nightly sunsets and daily sunrises
but every now and then she reminds us…

there is beauty in her surprises.

POETRY IS...

Today’s poem was suggested to me…
and for me it travels down a a circuitous route…
There is something different about it….
see if you can figure it out…

Poetry
is

love of words

written beautifully
backwards or forwards
up or down…

words
flowing effortlessly…

rhythm and rhyme

complementary

words

me
touching
You

mind to mind
heart to heart
soul to soul..

You
Touching
Me

words
meaningful
…words
beautiful
…words
of love

is

poetry.

SOME FRIENDS

How is it some friends can make us feel happy
make us feel whole
reach down into our hearts

and find their way into our souls?

TIME TO LET HER GO

As her hand slipped into his for the last time
his tears began to flow…
for he knew
after a lifetime of holding her hands in his

it was time to let her go.

A LONG POEM FROM A BRIEF ENCOUNTER

I saw him before I saw her…(I believe she was holding the door.)
There was a far away look in his eyes as he shuffled his feet on the floor.

I felt a twinge of sorrow for him as he slowly labored past
Each step seemed so difficult…more challenging than the last.

I saw her next when she caught up to him and I thought how nothing could compare
with the smile on her face as she helped him to his chair.

She fixed his hair, she straightened his clothes with an ease, a tenderness…a grace
and as she tended to his every need that smile never left her face.

I did not know this couple whom I assumed were man and wife
but as I watched them endure the ravages of age I imagined younger moments in their life.

The moment hey first met, when they fell in love…when they lived in younger skin
I imagined them with friends and family…imagined all the places they had been…

A lifetime spent in love together was not difficult to surmise
I saw it in the gentleness of her touch…and in the sparkle of her eyes.

When our eyes met for a moment I saw how her smile was masking her pain
and I thought how the more her husband slips away…the more her love remains.

I believe when we happen upon one another…even momentarily in a day
from every brief encounter…we take something away.

It may be a look…a smile…a glance…a gesture from afar
that finds it’s way into our heart and reshapes who we are.

As I left my brief encounter and walked to my car in a misty rain
I thought about that moment…about how she smiled through her pain…

and though there was a hint of sadness as I drove home by the sea
it wasn’t her sadness…it was her love…I took away with me.

A love so beautiful…so everlasting…so quietly proclaimed
It made me smile when I thought of it…
knowing I’d never be the same.
