SYNCHRONICITY

I believe in synchronicity…
coincidences we discover along the way…
little signs from nature
that help define our day.

Yesterday morning on our walk
as merrily we strode…
I found a dollar sign someone had painted
in the middle of the road.

“Deborah it’s a sign!” I said,
“right here beneath our feet.”
“It means we’re coming into money
and we’ll live on easy street.”

“I wonder how rich we’ll be?”
I said happily to my spouse.
“Perhaps we’ll win the lotto…
or Publisher’s Clearing House.”

We kept on walking contentedly
until, around the next corner, I found
there shining right in front of me…
a nickel on the ground.

Deborah took one look at our treasure
and said, “A nickel…how terrific!
I hope the next time you find a sign…

it’s a little more specific.”

I LOVE...

I love watching the sunrise
how the grey sky turns to gold
in the peaceful quiet of the morning
as another day unfolds.

I love being present at the moment
of nature’s awakening…
I love the silence being broken
when the birds begin to sing.

I love to watch the flowers yawn
when their nightly sleep is done…
then drink a drop of morning dew
and stretch to catch the sun.

I love watching the moon…
far from the noise, the lights…the crowds
as it hovers in the heavens
and drifts among the clouds.

I love being present at the moment
when nature goes to sleep…
how the night recedes to silence
and the darkness seems so deep.

I love watching the beauty and the mystery
of this wondrous day…and then…
I love knowing tomorrow

it will happen once again.

EBB AND FLOW

There is an undulation to life...
a natural ebb and flow.
Sometimes it’s dark and grey...
other times...it glows.

And when it glows...we must enjoy it...
every moment of every day...
so when it’s dark we have joy saved up
to help us light our way.

And when it’s grey...we muddle through...
we try to overcome our fears...
knowing joy will soon return...
in the wake of all our tears.

Knowing somewhere in our sorrow
If we look for joy…we’ll find it…
Knowing a cloud cannot cast a shadow…

unless the sun’s behind it.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Men,
It is International Women’s day…
a chance for fools like me and you,
to celebrate and marvel
at the things that women do.

I started to make a list
but stopped when my hand turned blue…
Let’s just say there’s nothing
that women cannot do.

If there is a job or task that needs completed,
we know a women can
accomplish it faster, more efficiently…
and better than a man.

Women should be the models
for fools like me and you
because, and this bears repeating,
there is nothing they can’t do!

Which makes me wonder…

Since they are intelligent, wise and strong,
yet not afraid to shed a tear…
perhaps we should be celebrating women…

every day…of every year.

A CANDLE LOSES NOTHING...

“A candle loses nothing when it lights another candle.”
This is what she’d always say.
“What is a candle for?” she’d ask,
“if not to help to light one’s way.”

To me, she was like a candle…
always wiling to lend a helping hand…
to share her light with others…
to help brighten up the land.

I heard her say it often…
yet she never once explained…
It’s not about what the candle loses…
it’s about what the candle gains.

I do not know the exact number
of years she has been gone…
But she lit so many candles while alive
her light shines on…and on.

Perhaps the beauty of a candle…
lies in its ability to mystify…
for when it lights another candle

its light will never die.

A MATTER OF ASSESSING

Observed:
Two people at a city park…in relative obscurity…
One man frowning, pacing to and fro…
the other sat smiling in the shade of an old oak tree.

It was a beautiful day.
The sun was shining.
There’s was breeze blowing in from the sea…
But look how different the two appeared…
What could cause such a discrepancy?

Wanting to know the reason
I set aside my book
and maneuvered into position
to have a closer look.

The answer was quite simple
It seems both men were assessing…
One was adding up all his troubles…
while the other…counted blessings.

Knowing When

When I look around my life
it's easy for me to see…
sometimes I am a student…
other times…
a teacher I will be.

When I don’t have all the answers
I’m a student…to be reached.
When I have a certain answer,
and I’m asked…
then I will teach.

One key to life, for me,
is easy to discern…
It’s knowing when to teach…

and knowing when to learn.
