THE MIRROR TEN YEARS LATER

10 years ago when I looked in the mirror I remember being appalled at what I saw.

I remember thinking…all those wrinkles, lines and bags…

Why, there ought to be a law.

A law passed down from our creators…it would have widespread appeal

If every time we gazed into a mirror…we looked as young as how we feel.

I remember thinking….who is that person in the mirror I am looking at?

because I don’t have that many wrinkles and my muscles are bigger than that!

I remember thinking…it must be a fun house mirror…

or that somehow it must be rigged…

How else could my nose take up so much room on my face…

and my ears look twice as big?

In the 10 years since I made that discovery…I’ve grown older at a steady pace.

My ears and nose have grown larger and I have a few more wrinkles on my face.

But I’ve come to terms when I look in the mirror each morning as a new day begins

that the person looking out at me…is the same one looking in.

I’ve learned a mirror’s job is limited…it only plays one part…

It shows me how I look on the outside…it can’t see inside my heart.

Which is why today…looking in the mirror…I don’t feel that old anxiety or fears

for I have learned to look behind the wrinkles…behind my big nose and my big ears.

Now I’m greeted by a smile every morning as my day’s about to start

It all began when I stopped looking in the mirror with my eyes

and started looking with my heart.
