GRANDPA LOVE

“Grandpa how do you know if you love someone?”
his granddaughter asked in a whisper soft and low

“That’s a hard question to answer,” her grandpa said,
"because in most cases you just know”.

“It starts with a feeling in your heart
which finds its way into your brain
and you begin to feel joy when that person feels joy
and pain when they feel pain.”

“And whenever you think about that person
wether they’re standing next to you…or from afar…
you cannot help but smile
because you know how lucky you are.”

And don’t you ever worry
when you feel love…you’ll know
and the minute that it grabs you
you’ll never want to let it go.”

"Do you understand?” her Grandpa asked.
his granddaughter smiled, “I do.”
Then she put her arms around his neck and said,
“Grandpa…I love you”.

Then she whispered in her Grandpa’s ear
another whisper soft and low
“Grandpa if it’s okay with you…
I never want to let you go.”

HE WANTED HER TO KNOW

He wanted her to know he loved her
and that his love would never stop
He thought…what if I shouted ‘I Love You’
from the highest mountain top?

Surely then what’s in my heart
she would understand
when she hears my words ride upon the wind
or echo off the land.

And then he thought…what if we walked along the water’s edge
together hand in hand
and I stopped…drew a heart and wrote,
‘I Love You’ in the sand

Surely then she’d understand
I could not love her more
when she sees what’s in my heart…
written on the shore.

But then he realized…words written in the sand
or echoed from the mountain quickly fade away.
He wanted something that would last forever
something that would stay.

Something permanent to let her know
the love in his heart would never disappear…
So every day he holds her close

and whispers “I Love You”…in her ear.

EVERYTHING HE EVER WANTED

He grew up a happy child
and without an ounce of greed
he’d look around at his world and think…“I have everything I need.”

“I have a home, and food and toys…
what more do I require?
I have a loving family…What more could I desire?

And on the day he married
without an ounce of greed
he looked around his world and thought,…“I have everything I need.”

“I have my family’s encouragement…
What more do I require?
I have a wife who I love and who loves me…What more could I desire.”

And when they were blessed with children
without an ounce of greed
he looked around his world and thought…“I have everything I need.”

“I have the joy and laughter of children…
What more do I require?
I have a family who I love and who loves me…What more could I desire?”

And when they were blessed with grandchildren
without an ounce of greed
he looked around at his world and thought…“I have everything I need.”

“I have grandchildren who smile when they see me
What more do I require
I have grandchildren who I can spoil……What more could I desire?”

That happy child grew into an happy old man
and without an ounce of greed
He looks around his world and thinks
“I have everything I need.”

“How could I have known,” he wonders
as his smile remains…undaunted
“that everything I ever needed

would be everything I ever wanted."

LOVE WILL WIN THE WAR

Lately…here in our own country…it has occurred to me
no matter where I look…hate is everywhere I see…

It’s nothing new…for hating others has been part of our history
ask Native Americans,
Blacks,
Jews,
Muslims,
Immigrants…
the L..G..B..and T.

To show you how easy it is for hate to take hold…
to succeed…to triumph…to win
The moment I say I hate all the haters…
Is the moment I let hate in.

But don’t be fooled by all the hate…for as we ride this carousel
as we travel up and down and round and round…there is much love…as well.

If we can look past all the hate (it’s not easy…I understand)
We will see people reaching out, hugging, kissing…holding hands.

We see random acts of kindness…acts of affection and generosity
We see a diverse amount of people embracing diversity.

So when you start to believe that love is dead…and you begin to mourn
Remember: “I Love You” are the first words spoken…when a baby has been born.

Then think of all the times you say “I Love You” every day
and why do you surmise
are “I Love You” the last words uttered before a person dies?

We begin and end our life with “I Love You” which only proves once more
that hate may win its share of battles…

but love will win the war.

LVE AND BASIC FACTS

Sometimes I sit and wonder:
Would our world be on a better path
if in elementary school we paid more attention
to the lessons we learned in math.

I imagine back then we didn’t understand
how those lessons would relate
as we grew a little older…
in terms of love and hate.

Even now I have to wonder:
What is your reaction
when I tell you love and hate comes down
to simple addition and subtraction?

I draw your attention to those math lessons…
the ones about basic facts…
Love as a plus…adds to the world
Hate, as a minus…subtracts.

And if I may extend a moment
this mathematical vision
When it comes to love and hate we can’t leave out
multiplication…and division.

Hate divides us, it tears us apart…
it makes the world smaller in shape and size
Love brings us together and with our help…
it multiplies.

I wonder if the world shouldn’t go back to school
perhaps that would help us all to see…
until we improve in our basic facts

we are only a fraction of what we can be.

THE LESSONS OF LOVE

When we are babies love is simple
It drifts down upon us from above.
It is where we first learn of comfort
of affection…
of tenderness…
and love.

As we grow a little older love becomes more complicated
It’s not as easy to read
It often surprises us
It can make us happy,
It can make us blush…
or cry
or bleed.

Love can make us angry
at times it can make us forget
It can be confusing
and bewildering
as we grow older yet.

But there comes a time
if we are lucky
when we cherish love…as art
a time when we can sit in silence
an read another person’s heart.

When we marvel at the distances
In life that love has brought us…
and we smile at the lessons
along the way that she has taught us.

We come full circle to a time when love again is simple
when it drifts down upon us from above
Where it’s up to us to share
the comfort
the affection
and the tenderness…

of love.

LOVE

Love is a wonderful feeling…but not alway easy to contemplate…
She’s often difficult to describe…
as this poem will demonstrate.

Love is patient…she lies dormant…
in your shadows…out of view
and when awakened her first words are always…
I’ve been waiting here for you.

Love has many parts, many passages…
many branches…many sections
she is not blind but she has a way
of looking past our imperfections.

Love means different things to different people
because…as time goes by
she can be simple, complicated, magical…crazy
she can make you laugh…and make you cry.

Love is never planned..she can’t be manufactured…
can’t be invented, created or bought…
Love is giving another person the power to break your heart
and the trust that they will not.

Love is feeling you’re together…even when you are alone
It’s when another person’s happiness…
is more important than your own.

You are not always able to see love
for she’s invisible like the wind
yet when you feel her brush against your heart
you know where she has been.

She can last forever...or be evanescent…
and no one can ever own her.
Which makes those of us who have felt her touch…

feel lucky to have known her.
